helterskelter400 - September 10th, 2003 at 11:49 AM

ok guys

am after some front tyres for initally the buggy & if good, poss baja as well.

found lots OS - rediculous price in oz.

do any of the big names make anything??

vw back wheel bias means i want them narrow with some good side lugs to cut a line. middle tread not too important.

hoping for some 185s, 15" rim, low ply count would be good as they can bag when needed.

something like this

You will find Hilux comes from factory in the base model with crap tyres like those. I have a set but they are 16" on my model. Many had 15" though

Also try ag places which do tractors and the likes. The army land rovers also run tyre very similiar and you can pick them up cheap at auctions.

I have found them to suck ass on the road though. I know Dazza is running the new Goodyear MTR's as is Wes. Maybe they are a good middle ground tyre.

I have street tyres on my buggy and find they work very well. Well Bridgestone 4WD Duellers anyway. Wes tells me they are street tyres.

I run Goodyear Wrangler MTR's at the moment. I used to run BFG mud tyres and found the BFG's were better. They had more bite.

I used to run wrangler AT's, dunlop major RV's, and 604V deulers, and found they all sucked compared to mud tyres.

mmm that is interesting, I rated teh 604's before I chnaged to the new line.

SO you won't go MTR's again ?

my experience is with a certain hill in my yard. Not the real steep one, but the rutted one.

When it rains, it turns to mud. When I had the 604V's I had a hard time making it up that hill at all. I would hit it in first, bang it into second and hold it flat revs in second. It would spray muf everywhere, in a line across the yard all the way over to the old subaru. Sometimes it made it up the hill, sometimes it didn't. First gear was a joke as the tyres would just clog up. Second gear was needed to try to clean them out.

Then I bought the BFG's. I went down the hill one day when it was raining to try out the tyres. I thought I would be silly and see how 1,200 rpm in first goes. To my surprise the BFG's bit in and went up. It was crazy the difference.

Since I got the MTR's I tried them too. They won't go up at 1,200 rpm in the wet, but with a little revs in first they will make it ok. The MTR's aren't as aggressive as the BFG's.

I found similar differences in grip on grass and dirt too. One of the grass hills that I idle up at 600rpm now, I had trouble getting up at all with the 604V's. If you weren't going exactly head on with a bit of speed they would spin one wheel. They sucked bigtime.

Alot of people compare tyres, but not many people compare them on the same hills in the same conditions.

thanks guys

opinions needed for front tyres for cutting a line & steering too please.

we have more sand than anything else but get mud & gravelly hills too tho nowhere like east coast. NZ is the next level on again!

Baja Wes - September 11th, 2003 at 01:52 PM

I haven't found anything that steers "well" in the sand. Everything generally understeers and follows pre-existing ruts. I have found bigger dia tyres to be better than small dia tyres though.

You need 4WD if you wanna steer in the sand.

or to be able to throw your weight around to lift the fronts outta ruts like on the xr.

untill then, i'll keep looking for narrow cutters with some side bite.

thanks

You'd better start eating if you want enough body weight to do that in the buggy :D

Would be cool to see :o
