The reduction boxes on my 65 Splitty are getting pretty noisy, and I'd like to give them an overhaul. Does anyone have any comments on whats
involved in opening them up, putting new bearings in etc..
I'd also like to know where you can get gaskets from in Australia.
Oh! and before anyone suggests moving to IRS, I want to keep her stock.
Thanks
Steve
Gaskets are avaliable from Dunhams in Wollongong, or just about any VW shop should be able to get them.
3 of the bearings are common every day ones you can get from a bearing supplier or Autopro, but the main load roller bearing is NLA, but I have found
it is usually the others that go first. Have fun.
Steve,
You can buy kits that have the gasket and seal in them. Brazilian are better than mexican which have really thin gaskets. Get the kit for a big nut
(46mm) box. I'd imagine vintage vee-dub,
Volksbahn would be the places to try. I got my from a place in melbourne at a horrendous price - I don't shop there any more unless I
*absolutely have* to (I'd rather wait for stuff to arrive from OS....)
I managed to get all the bearings from my local bearing supplier. I can look up the actual bearings nos (as opposed to the VW part nos) if you want
them. Bearings must be C3 rated!
Don't pickle the freeze plug in the back of the box out by driving something through it. Weld a nut onto it and use a puller (oil pump puller
works well) to get it out. Grind the nut off and re-use the plug - these ARE hard to find!

Thanks Rob/Dave,
Rob, can you give me those bearing sizes please.
Thanks
Steve
Each 46mm large nut 64-67 reduction box has
Two 6306 ball bearings
One 6305 ball bearing
One N207E roller bearing.
As I said you need C3 rated (tolerance rating) and try to get FAG, SKF or INA.
My local bearing shop can still get all these in FAG at prices well under what the US internet vendors are asking (bout half - still gonna cost some
bucks to do both boxes though). I imagine bearing shops in Syd could do the same?

Rob,
When I rebuilt my reduction boxes, (10 years ago) the bearing shop had no listing on the big roller bearing. lucky mine were ok.
Just in case your interested these are the best prices I got in Sydney:-
6306 $11.77 each incl GST
6305 $10.15 each incl GST
N207E $58.00 each incl GST
All C3 Rated and SKF/FAG Brands
My reckoning is that thats a total of
$183.38 to do a 64-67 splitty
Here is an exploded pic of what we may need:-
They're good prices! Think I pay around
$80 for the N207E from memory...
This is a rare case where we aussies come out ahead. Wolfsburg West's on-line catalog comes up with $US 123.20 for one side or US$246.60 for
both (bout Oz $380 for both sides on current exchange before freight and possible duty...bearing brand depends upon availability too!)
Any luck with the gasket/seal kits?
RobK
Thanks Rob I owe you one! A big one
