please help!! does anyone have any idea on how to fix the rear tranny mounts screw threading, looks like the few first threads gone flat and the screw
is going hard, is there any tool that can do rethread from the inside to the outside??
help!!!!
thanx.
Ok what are we talking about ?
I am guessing you are talking about the rear transmission cross member on a type 1 and the two large fine metric threaded bolts that go into the frame
horns. Is this correct ?
If so you can run a tap into them and clean them out. If the car is togeather and you want a quick fix just pack the bolt out with some washers so it
pulls the cross member up tight. If you are doing this slot the washers so you don't need to take the bolt all the way out.
i guess i can put some washers on it and tight it up about 3 spins, it will be imposible to do more than this,
the question is if it won't pull out on the long run...?
In short YES.
If you are only getting 3 spins then you have stuffed it. This happens when you try and do it up with wieght on it and therefore start it off
crooked.
You have cross threaded it. You can try another bolt and sometimes get away with it.
Using a die down there may be difficult because you may not have enough room to swing the die handle. Try a nuts & bolts shop & try to buy a
die-nut to suit the thread. I think its a 10mm with a 1.25 pitch or maybe 1.5 but take one of your mounting nuts with you to make sure you buy the
right one. If you can get it on straight (VERY important) you can turn it with a spanner or socket to clean up the thread.

I think they are 18mm.
yeah they are definitely bigger than 10mm.
Just take the other good bolt to a tool shop and ask for a die to suit that bolt. They will measure the thread. You will probably need another bolt
too, to replace the cross threaded one. You may even find a tool shop that will let you borrow / hire a suitable die.
I guess it depends on how many good tool shops there are in Israel. So how's the project going anyway?
