thinking maybe 2l kombi engine
or barrels and heads

Champagne taste beer budget.

If it's already a 1600, and price is an issue, maybe carbs and exhaust will give you what you want?

i have weber dcn40 and empi monza pipes gt40 coil petronics ignition, empi power pulley.

this runs well just looking for that little bit extra

can you put a 2l kombie engine into a beetle - if so what is the process required

2L type 4's go well into a beetle and are a better motor (my opinion), but not on a budget. They are more expensive to buy and re-build and much more expensive to get performance parts for.
Add to that mods required to the beetle and motor to fit it in and costs soon escalate.
They are also heavier, and if your going that far you might as well throw in a Kombi GB, more costs and mods.

There are some good options there that will add a few hp to a healthy 1600
After that you are looking cc's. Either a 1776 or 1915. Strokers are talking more $$$s.
That add for parts is a great deal. Make your self a nice 1776 and add dual carbs when you can afford it

on a budget, i would go a 1776cc motor, or if u are that perverted a 1915cc. but i thought of it this way, get the cam, crank, barrels and heads ported. with ur budget, and then use boltons, such as ratio rockers, carbs, ignition, exhaust etc later on when u have more money.

with the old carbs etc, u will be loosing performance but this way u build the engine in stages. and it costs money to split a case or pull an engine for head work so get this all done with the rebuild.
