Ignoramus shifter question
KOM123 - September 18th, 2003 at 09:20 PM

Hi all,

Often I read other posts not relevant to problems I am having just out of curiousity.

Lately there have been a few posts about shifters. Excuse my ignorance (and hope I can express this clearly) but are these shifters a way of replacing an "H" type shape manual gear change with a straight "back and forward" gear shift as if you were using a transmission motion on an ordinary automatic car? Does that make sense?

Are they easier to use? I've also noticed that alot of these are used by Beetle drivers. Can a Beetle stock gear change be a bit tricky? Notches have been mentioned also but does anyone use them in Kombis?

Cheers :)

No aftermarket shifters are always in the H pattern, just a smaller H, less movement of the shifter, some have a T handle too.
You can get a Berg shifter for a Kombi, but I don't think they are any easier than a stock shifter (in Good condition) is to drive.
On a street car I don't think you can beat the stock shifter, when all the bushes and uni's are in good gondition, some people use a type 3 shifter in a Beetle with pleasing results.

so will a type 3 shifter fit into a beetle or just the little block for the shorter shift??
cheers
