Hi all,
It's been suggested that my shift plate may be worn that could be why I'm having problems shifting from 3rd to 2nd.
I want to have a look at the shift plate just in case. How I can check out the shift plate, under the car? (I have a 74L bug btw)
What should I look out for?
Thanks!
Ron

it lives at the botton of the gear stick.
It is a solid plate and would be surprised if it was worn.
However - the plate may be loose. Just check the bolts are tight.
You have to lift the carpet for this at least, better if you take it out.
I would suggest there is more of a problem with the gear box coupling. This lives at the front ( front means front!) of the gear box under the rear
seat under a 6" oval plate. If this is sloppy you can have trouble changing gears.
Go to http://www.superbeetlesonly.com and then go to the tech & stuff
section.
There is an article there on "shift rod bushing replacement"
Have a good read of that article and then go exploring on yours
I think the shift plate their refering to is the one under the shifter. pull the two bolts out and the shift plate is what stops you from going from 3rd to 2nd without going into reverse. its a metal plate recessed into the shifter base.
More than likely its not fitted correct way round and or its not been adjusted correctly.
They dont wear much at all, but as Barry said other bits can contribute to the problem like the bush and gear rod coupling these all have to be
checked and or replaced as required.
