Howdy,

Well the SC has come from NSW to lovely QLD and is now in need of work for Roadworthy status.

So far Ive identified the following

* Brakes (Did most of that today)

* CV boot on LH Side. Luckily Shane gave me a spare CV so I can swap that in

Onto the big stuff.

* Upper Balljoints both sides

* Steering Arm on front Beam. Is buggered needs pulling out and replacing.

* Steering draglink

* Tie rod ends etc.

Now Ive been quoted about 700ish for that work to be done, is it worth me doing it myself given that I dont have access to a shop press etc for the balljoints, and is the steering arm on the front beam easy to replace, it looks easy from looking at Bentleys but i dont have the tools they describe (Slide Hammer)

Was also thinking now would be a good time to drop in an adjustable front beam Anyone got one lying around to suit a 72 ?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Im quite keen to tackle it if its worth my while.

Hi Scoots,
As usual, what you should tackle depends on:
- your skill/experience
- your toolkit and working environment
- depth of your pockets
At $~700 for the front end, you're probably talking about 50/50 parts/labour and the front end needs a variety of special tools such as BJ splitters which you might not have lying around. In the end you'll have to get the front end aligned, and I bet you don't have that gear to hand.

I went through the same exercise recently myself and concluded that I could save maybe $200 but run the risk of getting stuck with the DC in pieces in the driveway; guess what? I paid to have it done.

That said, doing it yourself builds character!

Quite a number of special tools needed for those repairs.
Isn't your's a '73 though???

Hmmmm everyone keeps telling me its a 73. Im sure the VIN plate says 4/72 Its a bit crusty so I will check again. The VIN number is right for 72.

Ill have to get my magnifying glass out.

Check the chassis no. (in engine bay) not the plate.
Should read 2622*** for '72 or 2632 for '73 model year.
26 is the model (pick-up), the next no. 2 or 3 is year, the next 2 is for 'T2'.
VW model year ran from August to August.
Pretty sure '73 was the first year with the high indicators and the type 4 motor.

The rear lights are the same as 73+

In contrast to your front-end job (a once-every-n-years job), where you can save money over the life of you SC is by doing all the routine maintenance and services. Since the service frequency is high relative to modern cars, it's worthwhile to get the right gear and experience in doing the routine work...

Thanks again for all the sound advice. Think I will go the shop route. Any reccomendations. Ive had a quote from custom offroad so far.

As for the year its definately looking like a 72. Im thinking it may have been in an accident at some stage and they have put a later model front on it ??? The front is pretty shiny

as for the front the whole ute had a spray about three years back.

Well its definately a NSW bus. Looks like a 73 but has a 72 VIN.

Just like the Swans looks like a Aussie Rules team but is clearly not.
