GEARBOX REPLACEMENT
MickH - September 24th, 2003 at 09:33 AM

Here is a simple question: I have been asked to change a gearbox on a 75 beetle as it is dying. I have replaced gearboxes and engines heaps of times but mainly on Kombies and buggies. Is it easier to drop the box and engine together as one item (possible) or do you have to remove the engine first ,then the box???Which is easier/faster as I'm short on time.Any feedback is welcome!!!!:jesus:(:vader

Motor first

Too much weight to fiddle fart around with getting it out of the shift rod connection and stuff. You have to wiggle and rock the motor to get it out and it would be a hassle

You have to split them any way so do the motor first.

Any one else

OK. Thanx. They have been quoted $650 to get it done at a garage. I've offered to do it for free and am giving them a new box I had laying around. Better to keep VW's on the road as cheap as possible!!! Thanx for your input.
