Engine tear down What to Keep ?
scooter - September 24th, 2003 at 10:24 PM

Hi Folks,

Just stripping down a recently acquired type 4 1800. It was quite full of sand and a bit siezed so figured it would be nice to pull it apart....

Just wondering what should I keep ???? are things like the push rod tubes, push rods interchangeable ? The heads dont look too bad at first glance no cracks etc. should i just hang on to the block for spares if and when i need them ?

Any advice mucho appreciated.

Cheers

What they said, plus...
Keep the heads; the 1800 heads have bigger valves than the 2000 and are interchangeable, thus are pretty popular.

Pulling down a Type 4 motor is great fun if you've only ever done Beetle engines before. You'll be amazed how much bigger and stronger everything is.

I'd strip everything down to the last nut and bolt, and clean everything thoroughly to get rid of any sand. See what's ruined and keep the rest!

Nearly all Type 4 parts interchange between 1700, 1800 and 2000 sizes. The pushrods, tubes and rockers are all the same. The heads are different; 1800s have the biggest valves but they all fit. The only difference is the crank on 2000 engines - they have 50mm big-end journals. 1700 and 1800s have 55mm. You need the matching crank-rod set.

Type 4 parts do not interchange with Type 1 though, if that's what you're wondering!

Keep the whole lot complete until you need to dismantle it. They tend to keep better that way, especially if you keep oil in it and give the crank a turn every so often. :)
