hi ya guys got a bit of a problem with the kombi at the moment. when I push the clutch down it doesnt seem to disengage the gear so when i stop at lights with it in gear and foot on the clutch its just stalls. and the only way I can get it back in gear is to switch the engine off. tryed tightening the cable but no luck there. any ideas welcome. its a 1975 1800cc kombi with 4 speed manual box. cheers in adavance
My guess would be the clutch throw out lever in the gear box. Bending at the welds.
Could be the hook at the pedal end or a badly frayed cable, I would check that first.
But if thats all ok then its defintly the throw out lever and the motor has to come out. So you might as well replace the clutch while your at it.
Hmmm 1975 1800 just like us.
I used to have probs over the years with clutch cables and fraying.
I always found when the adjustment had to be done a few times over a few weeks, and the cable appeared to be stretched, it actually was frayed badly
and ready to snap.
It will only take about 10 minutes to take it out and inspect it.
New ones are ummm about $30 I think.
We got a stainless steel one from Volkspower about 3 years ago and have not had to adjust it more than a couple of turns over that time and 50,000km
driving of which a lot is city driving with clutch pedal down-up-down-up etc.
The cable is the only bit I know.

The outer clutch tube will often come loose at the rear causing this problem, get someone to operate the clutch while you take a look underneath,
there is usually a weld that breaks near the torsion bar tube.

Another possiblity not mentioned above is the lever on the GB that the cables goes through is split. I can cause it to slip on the spline os the shaft
the throw out bearing sit's on.

As well as the problems already mentioned, also check that the mount that bolts to the gearbox is securely mounted - I had one tear a chunk of
aluminium off the side of the gearbox once. :o
Also check that the bracket for the clutch pedal pivot hasn't torn itself away from the body. (Yes, I've had that happen too!
)
I've just replaced the clutch cable on my '75 1800 with a you-beaut version from Boris at VVDS. The new cable is thicker than stock with
extra strands, pre-stretched and then coated in nylon (I think) for its complete length. I can't remember how much the cable alone cost me, but I
got the cable, the front clip and a new Bowden Tube for about $70 including postage. :thumb
