HI Fellow addict's
I want to get the tank off my Beetle resto'd the tank is sound with no holes, but it has the usuall rust scale inside. How can I get it cleaned and resealed, I have heard that Radiator repairer's can clean them out, and I know POR market a two pack tank sealer.
I am on the gold coast.
Any suggestions on how to restore it are very welcome!

I did the ones for my 65s last year and found the best way to do is as follows. I dont like using the seallers or or products would rather have solid metal there.

1. remove the outlet nozzle and tape up the thread with some plastic tape so thread dont get damaged

2. have outside of tank blasted to remove paint and find rust holes

3. depending on pin holes found either siler braze up or cut the whole section out and make new with sheet metal

4. if only a few holes fill tank with some soapy water and nuts and bolts and shake the crap out of inside it to remove flaking rust and scale

5 wash several times and remove nuts n bolts

6 hopefully no pin holes i blanked outlet hole up and sat tank on saw horses with a few litres of fuel inside to see if there were any leaks through pin holes.

7 undercoat and paint.

I remember looking into something similar for the tank on one of my bikes years ago. I never went ahead with it, but a number of bike shops had products you could use inside the tank, so you might be able to look there also.
Like Dave all I have done in th past is put some clean coarse gravel in the tank (I did it dry) rolled around for a while, removed then hosed out, let dry in the sun over a full sunny day, rinsed out with fuel.

And to state the obvious, welding/brazing should only be performed after ensuring the tank is full of something other than pertol fumes... e.g. water

Yep I was presuming that the tank had been sitting around for a while and had been washed out a few times with soap n water... before any welding or grinding

Lastly yes Rinse out with fuel until all grinding and welding junk has been removed.

Make sure you replace the Stock tank filter in the outlet nozzle and put a cheapy plastic paper filter before the fuel pump in the fuel line before fuel pump.

Ive done this with all my car n never had fuel problems, replacing the paper plastic filter every 12 months or so.
