What year model beetle is best for the ultimate offroad baja? It will be a ground-up rebuild :alien
I've built 4 Baja's and I've built them from '69-'70 models. Disc brakes, 12 volt systems and IRS sometimes.
Regards,
Mark
i can`t rembemer who told me or where i heard it but i think the super beetles are no good for baja because they have diffrent bodys. might be some
thing to look into .i`am at this monent bajaing a 65 type 1 and i did a 63 beetle 25 years ago

I dont believe one particular year is the best to build a baja from. It depends whether you want balljoint front or king pin front (balljoints are
limited in the amount of travel that they have, king pins dont have this limit but require maintenance that balljoints dont) Do you want 6V or 12V
wont be able to run big flame thrower spotties with 6V, Earlier beetles had thicker steel than the later ones so should be stronger, the earlier
steering boxes are considered stronger as well.
So as you can see, the ultimate Baja would probably end up a bitsa from lots of years........:thumb
And try to go with metal guards, cause with fiberglass guards you camnt get em insured, that what happend to boozer, and my opionion go for a
kammandur wagen much nicer and no engine hanging out teh back
Can't get it insured because of fibreglass guards????? Sounds more like its because he's just a young'un that he's having insurance problems. I've never had any problems with insurance, but then again I'm not under 25.....

NO one will insure me. at least untill i am 21 or so. been to bizillions of companies including shannons who told me to buzz off untill i was 21 or 25??? so yeah it sucks.:cussing:cry
Maybe if you didn't tell them your name was BOOZER you might have more luck!!!!
Is that Shannons, Yeh great my name is Boozer, under 21 and i'd like to insure a modified veedub with phat tyres, you don't do that
thanks
Doesn't seem to sound right does it

They knocked it back on Fibreglass guards?
That sounds absurd.
some Renaults and Range Rovers have Plastic guards and my EH has Fibreglass guards as does about 10 other EH's in our club.
Why dont you do like most teenagers these days and get it insured in your parents name?
A lot of insurance companies have wised up to that practice.
RACV have a $2000 excess if the child is not listed on the policy and $850 if they are.
Also you gather no rating unless you are on the policy.
They really are making it harder, but this is not new.
When I got my first insurance 1991 (third party) it was with SIO (GIO now) and after two years with them and no claims, they sent me a letter, not a
renewal for the third year, saying they will no longer insure me at all until I get at least rating 3. Well bugger me wouldn't that mean having a
policy to gather a rating?
I have never ever gone near or recommended them since. They even had the gall to send me letters for up to a year later telling me about their
services.
