Balancing dual carbies on a type 3?
jenz58 - October 12th, 2003 at 01:59 PM

OK

I think my carbies need to be balanced.

The type 3 service manual I have doesn't seem to have it (would they call it something else?) Couldn't even see a pic of anything that looked like a carbie:(

Went through the indexes as well at beginning of each section

I figure it's something I should learn to do:)

I'm off to help Jay paint her back room so she can get back online. If I don't reply real soon you'll know why:thumb

Jen

read the above story.

I will qualify first by saying i dont know if Type 3's have a single idle circuit set up like on my kombi. There you only adjust the right carb. You dont balane that style.

Unless you are experienced ehough to do it by ear you need a synchrometer

only buy the one on the left

Hey Jen,
T3's have a dual idle circuit, ie you have to adjust each carb separately. You will need a synchrometer, as stated by Blue, and a tach/dwell meter. Muir's Idiot Guide also has a full Procedure for balancing.

I used to do it just with a tachometer...
fairly easy...

Lee,
care to expand, would save me buying a synchrometer.

Cheers

Hi

You need to 1st do the usual tune up, get the mixture close as you can, then balance the carbs at idle, disconnect the linkage on 1 carb, pull the spark plug lead of #2 & #4 one at a time to see which side is idling highest, get them to drop the idle on each turn so that the motor souds similar after removing each lead, recheck mixture and reset balance, nearly finished, now you need to make sure each carb opens at the same time (syncronise), and keep blipping the carbs as you balance them to make sure they sitting back on the idle stops. Lees tacho method can be used to get a better idea of the drop in revs side 2 side.

Thanks guys, will go get my idiots guide out now and have a read:cool:

In my type 3 service manual would they be calling the carbies something else?

Jay's room isn't finished but we had a good chat while we painted. Then we both got dizzy from looking up and painting the roof and top part of walls ,so stopped once that was done. She'll be off line a bit longer:(

Hmmm, after reading my manuals I'm thinking my valves need adjusting

Not due for a service (still another 900 mls to go) but think a tune-up is needed

The Dr is running well but is having trouble getting up a very steep hill near me when he isn't fully warmed up. He usually doesn't have a problem with it

Any thoughts?
