Howdy Y'all,
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on putting an EA82 (non-turbo) subaru motor in a 1969 bug - with an adapter plate onto the 1500 gearbox.
any comments, ideas, anything? (even a poem would be a nice touch )

The EA82 is a nice little engine that will fit with little effort. However since you would need to go to the trouble of setting up coolant lines, fule lines + programable injection I feel that you would be mad not to go for the turbo version. A nice little hi flow T28 or similar and you could have 200hp in the tail for not much more than the 80hp non turbo setup. Anyway just my thoughts

I've run an EA82 carby motor in a kitcar and I think it was a great conversion. Goes well and sounds good .

Subi all the way! i run an EA71 in my bus at the moment and although it makes enthusiasts turn up their noses, it is the best conversion around.

I agree with 555bug. Although, if you got the motor cheap, and you know its in good nick, go for it. It would be a cheap conversion as you wouldnt have to uprate your box to handle the extra power of the turbo.
Im in the throws of putting an ea81t in my car and Id love any info that people have on this.

back on the ea82 - i'm getting a carbie version so i won't have to mess with programmable efi computers and the such - i have a bug with an ea82T with an EMS setup - the pipes to the front mount radiator and all - but i'm selling it because i need the money for debts and the such ( very regretful sale) but i'm sticking with beetles so i'm gunna put an EA82 carbe engine or an EA81 in the back of one.. less fuss with cutting out the firewalla - worrying about the EFI management and it can go onto a standard box with an adaptor - i'm basically going for the reliability of a scooby doo engine for the convenienve of having a newer engine for a quater of the price of buying a reco'd vw engine. blasphemy i know... but vw beetle none the less.

hey ya'll,

ok well i've been doing some research and found prices etc on the EA82.. and it's older brother the EA81...

basically the EA81 and EA82 are the same size (cc wise) - but dimension wise the EA81 is slightly smaller all round... this is due to the EA81 having an OHV rather than the EA82's OHC. i've been told that the EA81 is pretty much same size as a beetle engine so it should just slip right in... although a little snuggish. the EA82 being OHC will have more power obviously.. but will take a bit of cutting oof the engine bay - just some of the scirting to the right/left of the bay...
anyways if anyone knows different or wants to add their 2 cents, i'm more than a good listener

I reckon those Subaru cars are great, they'd probably make the ideal candidate for your Engine. all the work is done, Why stuff around with some old Body, Go Subaru All The Way.

On an engineering level it would be a good engine conversion....

Well i think the engine is better as a conversion, it beats paying for a rebuilt 1800cc beetle engine.. but i'd never Go Scooby Doo all the way... the engines are great... but i can't justify driving a subaru car around.. it's just not cricket... plus all my mates would think i've gone crazy... i've only ever driven bugs

I wonder how much the full job will really cost you. If you honestly add up everything. The out come will appear to be far superior, should drive Real nice.
Got to admit the Vw motor is expensive to do up High Performance. All the best with it. Look forward hearing what you decide and how it goes together.
