gearbox Q's
oval TOFU - October 13th, 2003 at 01:36 AM

I think this may have been asked before, but here goes... i want to get a later gearbox for my 54 oval- ppl are saying the 1500 box (final drive 4.125?) is the best coz of the
a) spread of ratios?
b) final drive ratio being taller than the 1300 or 1200's 4.3XX?

I am thinkin of runing a 1500 or 1600 with it. What are the issues with the front GB mounts with a 54 pan?

Can an IRS 1600 box with the 3.88 drive ratio be 'converted' to swing axel? ( i dont want to cut up my chassis to fit the IRS mounts) [orcan i get IRS without cutting but only welding?]

Cheers tech-heads!

Pretty sure u just need to weld the pivots on to get IRS

If you are in Sydney i am about to dump a Super beetle shell you can have if you want. It has all the arms and bits for the conversion

Consider having a box custom built. Yes it will cost $500 - $1000 but you can pick what ratios you want.

You cant convert the IRS box but you can pull the gears and put them in a swing axle.
Jak just went the other way where he pulled the 1300 gears and put them in his super box

Nah, i think i'll be right witht he spare Super parts... getting them from sydney when i'm in melbourne aint too fun.... I'll just stick with swing and lower it a bit... i think my rear torsion bars are so 'new' they haven't even sagged yet! The rear tyres have a smidgen of positive camber on them still...the 225's on the back help to flatten it out a bit tough... :D

Thanks Blue
