I need some advise on putting my 1600 gear box into my oval
I'll tell you what I know.....
There are three possible ways of doing this
1. weld and replace the mount on the floor pan from a later bug eg 1970>.
2. replace the nose cone on the gearbox with one from a sixtys kombi.
3. make a braket/adapter out of steel plate and bolt up to the pan.
Now I've heard different people say different things and I would like to keep the pan as standard as possible so number one would be out the
window and number two would be hard to get hold of, then that leaves me with number three which can put the wheel tracks out unless you elongate the
holes in the trailing arms a little and get the rear realined.
My Question is whats your opinions ?
Have you done this mod ?
what year model Oval?, 54/55 is different to 56/57!
It's a 57
anybody any ideas / help

What does the "tp" in your question?
tp = twin port sorry
So if its a twinport gearbox then it would be IRS meaning you would need a IRS pan ! Or is it a 1500 swing axle box?
Nick , check the current front mount on the pan. Late split case boxes did have the later tunnel case style mount.
Or welding on a new mount would be the easiest way. You can always cut it off and change it back later on. Forget changing the nose cone. Too hard to
find one.
I would also go with the 1200 short axles on the 1600 swing axle box. Keeps the wheels nicely tucked into the rear gaurds.
Why 1600 GB. Why not a 1300 box with 1600 final drive.
hey Dean
why a 1300 box with a 1600 final drive?
I take it the 1300 GB is pretty much the same as a split case in relation to the mounting points?
Is it a lot of trouble installing a different final drive?
I've heard a few ppl say the 1500 GB is the 'best'. Why is this?
(i hope this isn't a hijacking of a post here...)

Could be wrong, but I seem to remember that the 1300 box had higher gear ratios, but the lower final drive ratio. If you change the final drive ratio
to 3.88 you get a good all round box. Gears not too high or too low. Also got the short axles.
As I said just working from a distant memory. Is this right or wrong?? Can any one help out.
Thanks dean
I'm going to keep the pan a swing axel and use my 1200 axels to bring in the wheels back in under the archs.
I'm just keen to see what people say as I know that its been done many times over.

Dean will get aroundto ringing soon promise.
bump...
Whats everyone else's opinion on GB's? I'm looking to drop a later model GB into my oval, accel isn't a priority.. cruising is! So
the 3.88 final drive would be great. What are the ratios in a 1300 and 1500 like?
Cheers
Nick & Chris, I got this done on my KG a few years ago. I used a 1500 g/b because I do mainly city driving not highway cruising. They used the
shorter axels and modified the nose bracket. Flywheel and starter were kept the same

How much would i expect to pay for a solid 1500 GB? ie. good syncros and bearings....
and would it cost a bomb to install the later 3.88 final drive ratio into it since the guts would have to be played around with?
