There is different pumps for 3 rivet or the later 4 rivet cams.

fark...... so the smaller one is for the earlier cam?

what motors had that size pump.... anything pre 1600?

From what I know, earlier engines with 3 rivet or flat cam had 17mm, 19mm pump gears and even smaller on real early engines.
However later dished cam went as big as 26mm these will not fit on flat cam which is why later cam is dished.
You can buy, as i just have, a 26mm oil pump for a flat cam. 26mm is recommended if your running external oil cooler and filter. I think there may be even bigger pumps but these can cavitate at high rpm espacially if your running case with small 8mm galleries. Blueprinted 26mm can't go wrong.

If it fits use it... if the gears are larger or thicker and still fits... I would still use it...

If you use the early oil pump with the late cam it just makes contact, and eventually breaks off the edges of the drive and stops working.......:cry

but what about using the late pump with the early cam?
