Questions From Sydney
XXX-1.8T - November 3rd, 2002 at 06:11 PM

Hi guys this is my 66 Beetle that I bought for $800. Its my drifter as my other car is Audi A3 1.8T moded to the max and not keen on driving it to work everyday (dont trust it being there) so i bought this to get me from A - B.

I have some questions as i want to tidy it up a bit, the paints awesome with no rust, just the interior needs a bit fixing up

- It needs roof liner, how much does this usually cost and where can i get it from? Thinking of glueing mustard vinyl to go with the door trims, any advice?

-The cheapest way to lower it, only want to drop it 1.5 inches, heard the backs adjustable its the front thats a hassle i heard?

-Ive got some speakers for it, whats a recommended deck to fit in this small space it has, just looking for a cheap deck to put in it?

-I saw this nice 60 Beetle in Bondi 2day and it had different hub caps to mine they were more dome shaped, where can i get them from or are they a totally new wheel?

- Looking to get the wheels white walled how much does it cost and who do i call in sydney?

Thats about it also on a tight budget as ive spent all my money on my Audi, i live in Coogee but work in Parramatta so i dont mind to drive to get things for it

Thanx guys and sorry for the long post :D

Nice Beetle, for $800.00 you've done well.

Vintage Vee Dub supplies can help you with the headliner, I would try to keep it as original as possible, It will be worth it if you plan to sell it later.

What ever you do don't cut speaker holes in the door trims, the speakers will get wet, and it will stuff the door trims too. Get a panel to fit them behind the back seat, cutting the dash for a sterio is also nasty.

Lowering the front is best done with an Avis adjuster, it needs to be welded in and requires the front end to be dismantled completly, the rear can be reset lower.

I am not sure about the white walls, but there is a guy in Sydney who paints them onto your tyres, looking at your hub caps, they are as domed as they get, the '60 should have been the same as yours.

Good luck and end enjoy driving it to work.

Also i plan to keep everything original so no cutting holes in my new baby

XXX-1.8T - November 3rd, 2002 at 09:53 PM

BTW here is another pic of the hub caps i want

http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?action=attachment&ti...

do i have to change the hub cap or the whole wheel cos they look differnt to the ones i have and i love these ones pictured!

Che Castro - November 3rd, 2002 at 11:31 PM

the hub caps u are talking about fit the early stock wheels which are usually painted two tone. They fit the stud pattern that is called Wide 5 5 x 205. I cant really see if u have wide 5 wheels or not, it could be the later 4 stud wheels or the wide 5's with the wheel trim ring around the hubcap.

The best option is to get real white walls, or you can get whitewall inserts, although these tend to rub against the tyre , so they can't really be used permanantely.

Hey so is ur new 66 rust free? looks like an absolute bargain for $800! Nice audi... i definitely prefer modified german cars over modded Jap cars.

welcome to the forum :)

XXX-1.8T - November 3rd, 2002 at 11:35 PM

Thanx mate

my wheels have the 5 wide stud pattern on there so does that mean all i do is change the hub caps?

If so how much are hub caps or is anyone willing to trade?

242 - November 4th, 2002 at 09:10 AM

By the looks of the pictures you already have the hubcaps that you desire. There is a "dress" trim on your wheels underneath the hubcap. Simply take off the cap and remove the trims. Make sure you use the little holes in the edge of the cap to remove them so as not to damage those trims.
If you don't want the trims i will take them off your hands:D.

XXX-1.8T - November 4th, 2002 at 09:37 AM

So i do have the same hub caps the only difference is the border around them, if i do take them off then u will see my wheels underneath which are painted in the same colour of the body which i think wont look good!

So then i must be after plain wheel trims like the above pictures am I?

242 - November 4th, 2002 at 09:52 AM

Can't make out from the pictures what if any trims are on the wheels. Looks as though they are just stock wheels painted white or silver with stock hubcaps. Just paint your wheels a different colour.

XXX-1.8T - November 4th, 2002 at 06:53 PM

Anyone else have an idea on the wheels im after?

Also any other recommendations?

geodon - November 5th, 2002 at 09:26 AM

You existing things held in place by the stock hub caps are called "beauty rings" I think. They can still be bought new ex USA. The hub caps that look bigger & rounder I also think are called "moon hub caps" or something. I've seen them advertised in old US VW magazines like "Hot VW" etc etc. The caps have no VW emblem & are just plain chrome.

Che Castro - November 5th, 2002 at 10:51 AM

yeah i think u already have those wheels

well thats if u are after the type that are on this bug:

http://www.oldbug.com/56bvert.htm

XXX-1.8T - November 5th, 2002 at 06:37 PM

Im going to do my wheels like these

http://www.oldbug.com/137-3747_IMG.JPG

But the ones i saw covered the part thats white and the part that was Blue was silver chrome colour

Its at my uncles panel beaters getting done now so by next week my car should be finished.

I also got some US Spec tail lights and my Euro Plate from the RTA

N VW 66 B

Look sweet :)

Che Castro - November 6th, 2002 at 09:36 AM

yeah i love the look of the stock wide 5 wheels painted in 2 tone and with whitewalls... u can check if they are the originals, take off ur hubcaps and look for something that looks like a fraction stamped into the wheel, i think its the month on top of the last 2 digits of the year.

XXX-1.8T - November 11th, 2002 at 10:00 PM

so no one knows of the number of the guy in sydney that paints white walls?

Che Castro - November 12th, 2002 at 10:54 AM

twoguns - November 12th, 2002 at 12:34 PM

your in sydney... easy.
ring brian 'whitewalls' on 96042289 or 0408-254574.
he will com out to you. all you need is a level out side space with access to a power point. he will do the tyres on your car. any thickness you like.
i got 1 1/2 inch on my bus.
takes about2 hrs. look great easy to maintain. as long as the woman doesnt hit gutters.
just kiddin about the woman bit:kiss

XXX-1.8T - November 12th, 2002 at 06:39 PM

how much does it cost?

twoguns - November 12th, 2002 at 06:46 PM

it wasnt much. i think all four wheels costed somewhere around $120

but as far as i'm aware there isnt any one else at the moment. especially one that comes to you where ever in sydney

XXX-1.8T - November 12th, 2002 at 06:58 PM

thanx man appreciate it,

im so dead been sanding my wheels back to metal so i can paint them freshly took me all day to do one, is there any where i can by just a bare metal rim for my VW?

Hutcho - November 12th, 2002 at 09:48 PM

Take them to a local sandblasters/powdercoaters. It'll cost you next to nothing. Just make sure you cover them with paint quick as they'll rust faster than you can say "Ohmygodmywheels!".

XXX-1.8T - November 13th, 2002 at 04:42 PM

where do u reccommend

Hutcho - November 13th, 2002 at 08:24 PM

The company I used a while back, seem to have moved. Go to http://www.yellowpages.com.au  and search for "sand blasters" in your local area. A good idea would be to have a spray painter that is ready to sray your wheels when the blasters have completed their job.
Hutcho.
