Just lately as it's been getting warmer, my baja has been running a bit rough, feels sluggish, lack of power, and today t was pinging in 4th at 70kms and i wasn't pushing it, also it would have a strong burning smell after going up large hills in third or hooning around backstreets changing up and down gears a lot. I think it may be that it's running lean and isn't getting enough fuel and is overheating as a result. am i right?

When did you last check the tappets and gave it a tune up?? Might be time to do so.....also you may have picked up a batch of dud fuel......

we gave it a tune up 300ks ago. i know the carbie is worn so it's probably screwing around with me again....grrr...and i don't htink it was the fuel as it also tends to run better at night times when it's cooler.

Might pay to recheck your valves and timing again.....:jesus

If the carbs are warn, and you think it may be running lean, make sure your getting a good vacuum reading. May be a leak somewhere.
Would be worth double checking your timing also.

it's sort of a long term thing that we fix and it comes back time and time again. i think it's almost time to get the carb rebuilt or find a better one.

I had a silmilar thing with the 2 Litre Kombie on the way home from S.A.
I also cameup with similar thoughts of Fuel air ratios r.e. Carbie tune and float levels etc given I knew little about the history of the motor, I also thought about Ignition Timing.
I was foot to the foor trying to pull a trailer and kombie DOWNhill and it was driving me crazy, and smelt hot to.

It turned out to be the result of the lobe follower on the points, wearing out and changing the points gap and therefore altering the timing,
So maybe check the points gap and Condition, be sure to have a bit of grease etc on the lobe for the distributor shaft if you find that its wearing and creating problems,
I think the car wouldnt even Idle if the carbie was so shagged that it was giving you this sort of trouble, it would just suck air around the butterfly valve and thus pull more fuel to make it impossible to slow the motor down to an idle setting.

Getting vapour lock in the fuel filter makes the Notch run on two cyclinders, try a newy, that an releasing the handbrake too....just kidding!

i htink my Dad found the problem. water in the fuel cause he left a drum out in some rain and it must've sucked in some water.

Best advice... NEVER use drums for fuel.... thats what bowsers are for.... LOL

I am just about to install a High Energy electronic Ignition to stop the points from burning, then I'll only have to keep check on the lobe wearing down... and I always have My ignition points lobe greased as it usually tells You on the box and the little pack of grease that used to come in the points box...
I don't think they do that any more do they??? Just because they don't include it doesn't mean You don't have to do it...
I grease or Oil every moving thing in My cars. I believe 300kms is a long time in a Volkswagen.. or any car with points.. I used to check mine every weekend in the good old days.,when it was the only car I had...

Its also running liek a pig sorry man but it is, if ya got teh time and the money id check it in for a service, or steal one of the other engins up the farm.

Black Math if you look at my earlier post, i said that it was running like a pig because it has water in the tank, and i don't have to money and it has just been serviced as i said earlier. and grabbing an engine from the farm is not an option as none of them are running.
