Neumier (not sure of spelling) Automotive on the Pacific Highway in Belmont North . The number is 02 49454811. I've never heard anything bad and have had top quality service every time, they also carry a range of spare parts.Highly recomended.:thumb:thumb::thumb

Ben Durie Automotive Engineering at Teralba would be the best VW mechanic in Newcastle by a long shot. I have no hesitation in taking my Kombi there.

I have found that other mechanics mentioned have too many jobs going, too many personnel and therefore, tend to do a quick and unreliable job. For instance, when taking my newly bought kombi for a tune and service, the cracked and corroded distributor cap was left on the vehicle. I thought it would have been the first place to check. Cracked and tired hoses were left on, meaning many air leaks and exhaust still had leaks as well.

Durie is comprehensive, extremely experienced, professional, and also a good bloke. At Durie I have had two new heater boxes installed, all rubber hoses replaced, carbies overhauled and new kits; cv.s and cv boots, tunes, lubes, electronic ignition replacing old points system etc. My kombi has never run better.

i hav no hesitation in agreeing 100% with that...

Go with Ben durie.
i don't trust any other vw mechanic with my Dubs. (he builds a good motor aswell).

others around are

Penfolds Automotive (Is the best place for spares new and second hand)

J&W automotive repairs. (a little iffy)

German george (only likes to work on stock vw's) but very good at his job.

But Ben Durie is the best one for mechanical repairs, engine builds and performance parts.

for exhausts go to Lilfords at maitland
or any of the carline muffler places and get a custom one made up.

i always used ben durie for my vw's.

but now with his sad passing away, i am after a good mechanic do to a tune up on my beetle as its running heaps rough at the moment. any recommendations?

I wouldn't recommend German George just on his attitude, wanted my brakes sorted and a service done on my 56 Oval....told me he's not interested in those old pieces of junk even after telling him it was restored Beetle....to a high standard...... he's a Knob jockey of the highest order

Sounds like you got Hendrik's brother Theo on a bad day, he can be a bit testy about "non standard" (hates my Kalita ) but still does a great job, rebuilt my engine after I managed to seize it good and proper, gave me the evil eye for being such an f wit  I've always got great service and advice, works only on VW's and was trained by their father who also was a dub specialist. BTW they are of Dutch decent, don't know where the German came in but it stuck and been known as German George forever. :tu:

I don't know who i was speaking to at the workshop but was not impressed with his PR skills, my 56 is as stock as can be right down to the cross ply's..... i just need to move it as leaving Newcastle, had a go bleeding brakes over Xmas, couldn't get them to pump up, could be master cylinder problem, no obvious leaks, just don't have the time or facilities to do it. Thanks for feedback, everyone has a off day but not good in a service business.

1SlowBeetle - June 2nd, 2015 at 02:44 PM

I know this is an old thread, but I have an old bug that has been in storage in Newcastle and I need the carb and brakes rebuilt so I can drive it a long way south. From what I hear Ben Durie shut up shop. My car is non standard... apart from the glass. Who is good these days?

donn - June 2nd, 2015 at 05:05 PM

Your correct, Ben has shut up shop but only because he has departed this life, I reckon Nymeyer at Belmont would be your best bet though he does have a bit of a thing about non standard, they ( two brothers) work exclusively on dubs, trained by their father who also was old school exclusive dub mechanic.
