Hi
On Sunday I was about 40ks from home and I was sitting at a set of lights, as they were about change I put my car into 1st, the clutch suddenly felt
dicky and was engaging just off the floor. I suspected that the cable was about to break or that the pressure plate had collapsed. I nursed the car
home and checked the cable for fraying at the trannie end, all looked OK.
I'm using a special 215 mm clutch in my car made by Race Clutch in Queensland, the owner Jim Berry is an old VW racer, so I had a word to Jim and
he wanted my flywheel sent back up to him so that he could build me another clutch, so I’m thinking another $500 for the clutch plus freight, car
off the road for a few weeks, but Jim kept telling me it was really rare for his clutches to fail in the way I described.
So I got under the car again and I thought I had better pull the clutch cable out and check for fraying at the pedal end before I go any further. Well
I removed the metal bracket that bolts to the side plate (IRS box) and holds the guide tube, it had fractured and had allowed the guide tube to poke
through and back the clutch off, the female end (front part) of the guide tube had also fractured, just imagine how I would have felt if I found this
problem after replacing the clutch.
