Guys my mechanic reckons my engine has lost compression is this possible?

I cruised to Canberra and back no probs a month ago and the car hasnt been driven since. I took it to my mechanic as he recommended it needed the Carby to be rebuilt. Rebuilt the carby but the car stalls every so often, he said his put 3 other carby but still it stalls.

Well, you obviously took it to the mechanic with a problem?? What are the symptoms?
An engine can have low compression and still appear to run OK. Only way to be sure is do a test yourself.

Nah i didnt have a problem i just took it for a general service but then he rang me and said i should rebuild the carby....

Is it possible for my engine to die just cos its been sitting for a month?

Could it be it doesnt like what his done to the carby or carby's?

Any good service-oriented garage or service centre should be able to give you an independent compression reading for all four for, say $20. That would at least get rid of the ouji-board factor in what your mechanic is telling you.

You might then decide whether your current mechanic is right for you; something about throwin on 3 carbies and then blaming the stalling on compression seems to me little bit less than fully transparent....

did the compression test and it got 110 which is good

But the car still stalls when idling now if his rebuilt the original carby and put other carbys on maybe its no the carby's but something else?

Could it be the Idle solonoid or maybe fuels not getting to the carby - fuel pump maybe?:bounce

check fuel pump by takin off fuel line goin into carby and crank it over let fuel go into container itr should be abit faster then a dribble.
also check what rpm ur idle is should be around 650-700 also check ur idle and fuel mix!

The compression test has to be done on all 4 cylinders. As long as there reasonably close then it should be OK.

I can't believe you mechanic can't tell you what the problem is. Sure he only did a general service, but he should be able to diagnose the problem to some degree without all the guessing.

If the engine is stalling, my guess is a blocked idle solenoid, idle set too low, idle mix set incorrectly, carby linkages not adjusted properly, the timing is out, or maybe you have a cracked dizzy cap, leads or dirty plugs. Considering that you have just had a service and a rebuilt carby put on, none of these problems should exist without him knowing about it.

Take the car to someone who knows what they are doing.

Edit: If it was the fuel pump, the problem would be more evident under power or at revs....

So is taht 110 lbs on all 4 cylinders ??? or just the one and there saying that the others are OK ??? So whos your compression tester ???

Some of the obscure problems I have encountered over the years.

A dud new spark plug I fitted (Bosch - made in India now). Motor wouldn't idle properly. Another new plug (NGK) and it was fine.

Poor idling, erratic, high then low, tuning carbies would not help. Turned out to be worn baseplate in the distributor.

Valves needed adjusting. I fixed this one

These are some examples of poor idling I have had that are not related to the carbies. There have also been times the carbies have been at fault.

My mechanic has diagnosed the faults on these occasions when I couldn't.

are you sure your mechanic is actually a mechanic??? Ive had enough people around here that dont even know which end the engine is in my car.....
