Re Chroming Wheels
silver - December 7th, 2003 at 06:58 PM

Just wondering if anyone has done this?
Recently there was a post concerning the rechroming of wheels. Did the author get it done? how much was it? and how did they turn out?

silver - December 7th, 2003 at 08:55 PM

yeah I Know that, but how much? is it worth it or should I just get some more, they are Mangels

silver - December 7th, 2003 at 08:59 PM

Or I might get them de Chromed and then Painted I am considering my options.

matara - December 7th, 2003 at 09:09 PM

Silver,

I just had my 356 wheels dechromed by Astor Metal Finishers in Fairfield. 2 wheels for $100. Mr Clean in padstow will blast and powdercoat for about $35 a wheel.

I would of liked to rechrome my 356 wheels but stripping cutting chroming rewelding them would of cost me half what the cars worth, and 356's had painted wheels as standard anyway.

Cheers

Steve

Yeah I agree
I was quoted abt $250 ea to convert 5.5 Mangels to 4.5" & re-chrome; nearly had a heart attack

VWFOOL - December 8th, 2003 at 06:01 PM

matara - December 8th, 2003 at 07:23 PM

ghianut I have someone with 2 Lemmertz 4.5' wheels for you. Check your U2U

lowrider - December 9th, 2003 at 07:09 AM

The quote was verbal over the phone here on Sunshine Coast... I think he was just trying to scare me off.
But one of the forum sponsors:
Custom Street & Offroad will do it

at three hundred dollars a wheel, thats 1200 dollars, so your 356 cost you 2400. I'll double your money and give you $5000 for it. and a slab of beer

KruizinKombi - December 9th, 2003 at 08:17 PM

Last time I got a quote for chroming wheels it was $170 (or $175?) at a place in Melbourne.

Hey Retro

Were they made of Carbon Fibre???

retro - December 12th, 2003 at 11:10 AM

No Chroming Fibre

KruizinKombi - December 12th, 2003 at 05:41 PM

lol Blue ;)

It is expensive though, I was quoted more than that, from memory, which is why I never got the wheels I wanted :(

56astro - April 1st, 2004 at 09:22 AM

So, let me get this straight.

If I want to get my VW std steel wheels chromed, do they have to be split?

I thought I could just take them to a chromer (in Lismore) and get them stripped and chromed.

:jesus

retro - April 1st, 2004 at 01:55 PM

Yes you need to take the centres out fo your wheels get them chromed then weld them back into some new chrome rims

56astro - April 1st, 2004 at 02:07 PM

Please explain why??

wadd - April 1st, 2004 at 02:37 PM

i looked at getting rims done in qld top end and was told that they could not do them to large or something like that .i rang a few places and was told that they knew of no one who does them.
:cussing

56astro - April 1st, 2004 at 03:14 PM

Just got off the phone to Winkler & Patrick in Lismore.

They said they have the wheels split as well, because there are some spots on wheels that after chroming as a complete wheel will start to rust over time. They used to do wheels complete a while ago but have since found out about the problem.

$160 for ea rim to split on a lathe, strip and chrome, and re-weld from behind.

retro - April 1st, 2004 at 03:35 PM

That sound fine I paid $170 per wheel but I got brand new rims 7x15 and 8x15 I dont think you well get them any cheaper.
