is there any reason why I should not adapt a beetle thermostat to fit the kombi 2L, fitting it is easy enough, just wondering about length of travel & opening temp, this one has 65 deg engraved on it:jesus

From memory proper type 4 thermostats switch ~80 or 90C, but 65 should be fine.

yep, I can't see why it won't fit OK with a little fiddling, it is the warm up time to 60c that seems to take ages on ours, after that every thing is OK

Kim test it out in a pot of boiling water to see if its still good. this may save some time.
As for the opening temps I dont see why they would be different for a type 1 to a type 4 air cooled engine.
Will the threaded end of teh thermostat fit up to the Type 4 cable ???
It is New, I have figured that 65c opening temp of upright motors is far better than the 90c opening of the correct one - for Aust, anyway, mine with
no thermostat took 20 mins driving home from work today to reach 65c oil temp in 20-25c ambient temp conditions, I have a coupla dodgy ideas to adapt
it to cable & will have good or bad answer by 1 A.M.

I have finally done it engine heats up to satisfactory temp in 8 mins from dead cold, instead of 20 if lucky

JUST REMEMBER the thermostat heats up from spent cooling air from the heads/barrels, NOTHING to do with oil temp. So it will reach the set temp long
before the oil gets to operating temp.
Dave, type 4 and type 1 thermostats definitely switch at different temps. VW must have had their reasons, but a type 1 thermostat will be better than
none
As Kim says, will be fine for our climate.
As for checking them, you can tell by their length when cold. They usually (well pretty much always) fail by cracking and leaking which means the
don't pull closed anymore. See Kim's pic to compare.

Yes i say the opening earlier in our weather would be better, dont know too much about the Type 4 engines never had the opertunaty.

Andy, I haven't checked yet how long it takes to open from cold yet - another use for the webcam in engine bay linked to laptop computer at front

Leave a bit of extra rope when you tie up the arms.... so it gets caught in the fan when its spinning over... make sure your near a fire hose when
you open the engine lid as it will need a hose out.
