Hi all,
can anyone advise an easy way to convert the 6v genny to a 12v one. Is a re-wind the only way?
a later 12v one won't fit the fixed pedestal ...
thanks
Andy
Yes the only way is to re wind a 6Volt genny into a 12V output.
there is one other way if you can find a 90mm dia genny from an early Porsche.... but there like rocking horse shit and about 20 times the price.
I would be interetsed to know if you do happen to find an Auto Electrician or perhaps a Motor rewinder or reconditioner who is willing to rewind your
generator.
I know this used to be pretty common with alkl the 6 volt VWs getting around but its died off nowdays.
I had a 6V / 12V rewind genny a few yearsago 1976 to 1979 used to run good.
I'm using a brand new Brazilian 14v 38amp generator which is the same size as an original 6v gen. Not too sure where you buy them, I had to swap
an old floorpan for it
yep i think thats the problem they have all dried up... n gone west none left
I would like 2 of them to convert my 56 and 65 restos to 12V... bloody 6V batteries area pain in the arse.
I could swap batteries from any of the cars and always have one charged ready to go.
that begs the next question...
anyone out there got one of either of the above
to spare??
Andy
Ive ask a few auto Electrical people here in Sydney but they all say they aint got the time or effort.
I suggest you look around at some of the older established Auto Elects up around yr way maybe they have the experience.
thanks..
on the trail of someone in Brisso to do a re-wind
Let me know if you find a place as i will get a couple of them done as well.
Guys
I know this is rather exxie, but on my old Elfin F-Vee, I simply added a 12v regulator to the 6v gennie.
It results in a very dirty, noisy output waveform but if you not too worried about noise in the radio the generator worked just fine like that
.
The gennie light will not go completely out under about 2000rpm.
Shitty sad fix but works well enough to get you going.

Interesting
I know that the 12V genny has more windings in it than the 6V thats have the problem trying to stuff more copper wire in the guts of the genny
