Has anybody ever experienced this problem on a Type3 when you suddenly take your foot off the gas and a 'thug' sound occurs from under the
car just near the handbrake area?...
Thanks,
AL
Check the welds on your accelorator cable tube. Thats the first thing that comes to mind. Other than that. Guide tube through any tinware? Or above
the gearbox. Those are the only things that come to mind straight away. Best bet would be to call somewhere like volkspower. They deal with these
sorts of things all the time.

Exhaust hitting the body ??
does the gear stick rattle could be the shifter rod bushing
Thanks everyone. The gearbox is in beautiful condition, no rattles or grinds etc...I can't be sure whether it's the exhaust hitting the body
though (sounds possible). Please keep them coming...
Thanks again,
AL
Check forward mount of rear suspension frame (underneath just behind handbrake position) to see if it needs tightening. Under deceleration this could
make a "thuggy" kinda noise.
Ian.
If the Type 3 is a pre IRS rear end check the 3 engine gearbox mounts using a large lever.
They may look alright but could have delaminated or perished and just sitting there and bounching around under deceleration
I had a similar problem on an 64 Type 1.
It was the front gear box mount
Thanks again everyone!

Just received news from the mechanic, you were right Dave, it was the engine/gearbox mount. Is this part rare Dave, it seems everything for this darn
car has been difficult to obtain! How long does it take to replace?
Thanks,
AL
Told yar Told yar told yar
shut up no only bragging cause i got the diagnoise right.
Aldo
It can be replaced with out removing the engine .... BUT its quicker and probally easier to remove the engine and do all 3 mounts at once.
So i guess your mechanic will be charging you a labour rate to do the job because the engine mounts are not all that expensive.
Let us know how it goes.
From memory theres nothing unusual about the front gearbox mount for a early Type 3... i thinks its the same as a Beetle.
Put in urethene mounts this time.
Are they different to Type 1 mounts???
