Alternator running hot
*did* - January 13th, 2004 at 03:15 PM

Not a VW question, just general.

The alternator on my '87 toyota corolla shat itself at the weekend, so today I put in a spare one I had lying around.
Everything appears to be going well, as a good voltage is being supplied from the alternator now.
BUT
After driving to the servo to fill up, I got home to check that the pulley was tight enough, which it is, and the alternator is bloody roasting.
I don't remember the old one getting this hot. Is this a problem?

Thanks

Check what current you are drawing.
Sounds like you're sucking the guts out of it.

They work,
or
They don't work.
Yours is about th do the Latter

i dont have any accessories on, just the engine is running.

i've been looking around using google, found out it could be the regulator is shorting.

One of the diodes inside the alternator was shorting to the case. So it was working, but wasn't going to last much longer.
I got a brand new one supplied and installed for $289 by the RACV (in my driveway).
