oval TOFU - January 14th, 2004 at 02:46 PM

1) Whats the maximum wattage globes I can use in my beetle?

2) When will i need to install relays?

3) I've got a glass and metal fog-light- should I use 70W+ for it? use a relay too?

I'd like to know coz i'm going to be converting my 6V candles to 12V soon..

Thanks yous, yous guys.:thumb

I think you will find that you can only get 110 W globes.

I got H4s semi sealed beams in the Type 3 maybe there a bit brighter.

What years your car cause the real early headlights can fit the later head light globes, as there different.

He's got a '54 oval. Currently 6v.

Ok if its an Origional 54 and has the early headlight ... they are a bayonet type globes and you carnt do anything with them.

He will have to get a set of the later 40HP headlights and reflectors and get the higher wattage globes for these

Cool, I'll check that out. The lenses have been replaced by the previous owner to the later style lens (not the type with the oval surface in the center) so maybe he changed the reflectors as well...

I'll be changing to 12V before long...

thanks Dave...:thumb

Ive got the hightest wattage in my Beetle and it runs fine without a relay.

Maybe you could talk to an Auto Elect place for the relays on the spotties... i know its better to wire them up so they have a seperate switch and only come on with high beam.

with the 40hp buckets and such, uding the later globes i have they are pointy and have a little reflecting cup in them, they also have the end dipped in some kinda stuff, these work good in the stock way? or better to remove the reflector bits facing towards back of car? and which way should the little dish inside of the globe face......

sorry to hijack post but it may be useful for you oval TOFU

Yeh, the globes I got sound the same to the ones you have - H4's i think they are... the ones i got are the halogen & xenon gas filled globes... hope it won't be too ricey...

sounds like I'll have to get later bulb holders too...

vw54 - January 30th, 2004 at 07:13 PM

The globes you have sound like Quartz Halogen. Try n not to put your fingers all over them and wipe them down with some prepsol before installing grease tends to make the globes blow easier.

the tip of the globe is painted black so it also throws the light back to the reflector.

The cup section is good to have as it throws the light back to the reflector

leave these in Adam and paintt he surface with some spray chrome paint or line it with aluminium foil to make it shiny

I thought you already had the later reflectors ??? Oh forgot to mention the reflectors have to fit with the matching headlight rims and the adjusting screw are located in different places.

Also the off set section that goes between the reflector and the rim is different..... so theres not much you can use from the real early headlights... you really need to get the whole lot.

At least the glass lens will fit or inter change. But the later prizimatic ones are better for directing the light spread or pattern.

How do i know Ive been through all of this several times before.
