My mechanic has tracked down the cause of my kombi's loss of power and overheating.
One of the exhaust valves only lifts about 1mm - so the camshaft must have a lobe worn off.
1. Obviously it'll be expesive to pay the mechanic to take the motor apart and replace it (and who knows what else will need doing - we already
know that compression is way down in cylinder 3).
2. I could buy a second-hand motor - but that's expensive too, and it could be a good one or a dud.
3. I could attempt to rebuild my motor myself, but I've got a full-time job now so that'll take me months and so I'd need another car
to drive in the meantime - again, an expensive option!
What do you guys and gals recommend I do? All suggestions very welcome!
I've never heard of that amount of lobe wear!
Sounds more like a bent valve. Also check the rocker gear.
I take it this is a 2 Litre air cooled Kombi Engine ???
Find a good mechanical workshop or get a short engine and change over all the bits n pieces.
I would consider buying a 2nd hand motor and wacking that in
The reason being is that you should be able to recoup some of the money when you have rebuilt the other motor and you can sell that one
or
if the 2nd hand one is goodie you could then rebuild the other and sell that
Pretty sure Dave Becker had a good 2L for like under the $1k.
Bus man had one as well i think????
Could be a bent valve
I have seen whole heads come off lifters as well
You could try and pull the head in car and see if it has bent valves.
If it is it is an easy fix (bwahaha - well easier than a cam)
Good luck
