Rebuilding my 2.0L motor!

Well I've decided to take the plunge and completely rebuild my kombi's 2.0L motor. I'm thinking of giving it a bit of extra power while
I'm at it - but nothing too expensive.
I'm sure this is the most frequently asked question of all, but here goes - anyone got any advice on rebuilds for a first-timer?
I'll be searching this site thoroughly, and Shop Talk Forums as well, are there any other resources I should be looking at?

How much do you plan to do yourself?

This may be a frequently asked question but it is not one I have seen any satisfactory answers to! If you've followed some of the threads on the
Type4rum in particular you will know that they rapidly spiral out of control along the lines of "well if your going to put a 74mm crank in you
may as well put in a 78mm. Then you'll need to get your case clearanced, use different rods and pistons, etc,etc...":puke:puke:puke

Maybe. I've got an old Triumph that nearly runs, a few hours should get it going, so I might use that as a driver. Or throw a cheap
motor into the kombi and then sell it again once my 2L is finished. Or just not bother at all - I work at the same place as my girlfriend, so she
gives me lifts... I probably don't need a car at all!

Besides the "Bentley" manual, see if you can get a read of "How to Rebuild Your Volkswagen Air-Cooled Engine" by Tom Wilson. When
rebuilding there is not a lot of difference with the engines, just take your time.
