Doghouse conversion
oval TOFU - January 24th, 2004 at 05:38 PM

Is it possible to convert a 1500 to accept a doghouse cooler? Is it really worth it if you dont intend on pushing the engine too hard anyway and have hoodjax?

first question:yes
Second question:No :thumb

you have to change the fanhousing, backing plate and fan on the generator, back tinware (over gearbox), remove 1500 cooler and install new 1600 cooler.(unable to buy new, secondhand?????) all this has to be done with the motor out, or with the engine lid and brackets removed.

Don't bother, HOODJAX's are the answer !!:D

I added a doghouse cooler etc to My 1500, although its now a 1600cc sp.
With our HOT summers, You probably need both.... I also have hood jacks.. depends where You live.. if You live on the coast You probably would be OK.. inland... the dreaded dropped valve on number 3 cylinder is well known without dog house coolers... I don't think it matters how hard You drive, the engine is still going to get very hot... I personally wouldn't take a chance...

well I don't think you are "taking a chance" with a standard 1500 engine in a standard car !! Like how many millions are there on the roads around the world, in countries a lot hotter than Australia !!

The Doghouse cooler, like what Lee has done will certainly be better, but not a "must do".
If you have the parts and the time then yes, do it. But if you don't, and your worried ,just fit a vented bootlid and use the Hoodjax.

Well, I 've been having problems finding the parts I took off 7 years ago.. I found the glass sun roof under My Sons bed!!
I have found most of the new bits which is just about everything...
So hopefully, it won't take 7 years or 7 months to complete..LOL.. I have been doing something on it every day....
in the 35-40c degree heat...
There are a lot of things to replace when You completly strip a beetle down...
I'll keep taking photos as I do things...

I dont think I could be bothered doghousing my engine...yet.. maybe later when I have a real job and time (bit of an oxymoron there) But I just want to drive it and enjoy it!

thanks for clearing things up guys!:thumb
