Push Rod Tubes
VolksFolks - January 28th, 2004 at 07:19 PM

Today i was to reseal the exhaust on my 75 kombi, removed the exhaust, and removed the manifold from the motor, sealed i and replaced it, upon tightening the studs one rusty little feker sheared off, so i removed the exhaused again and tried to remove the stud from the head with some vice grips, fec me it broke again,so i welded some threaded rod as a temp measure which worked fine, when it broke i dented a push rod tube, all looked ok but after starting the motor and was quiet as a whistle, but wait oil pissing out everywhere, the dent to the tube must of been worse than i thought, are these rods easy to replace/seal, or does the head have to come off, not too worried about the head coming off as i can replace the stud, but any tips would be great!! thanks

Andy,
No, you do not have to remove the head. Pop off the rocker cover, remove rocker gear, pushrod and spring wire retainer, then pushrod tube can be removed.

Head needs to come off to replace original pushrod tubes as they are a crush fit.
You can buy tubes that are two piece and adjustable. They're made from machined aluminum and work well ! These can be fitted without removing the head.
There is also a two piece with a spring, these are shit !

Or you could use the good old tube of silicon !

Nah - fairly easy

I take it is a Type 4???

Take the rocker cover off

Closely look how the spring thing goes in at the bottom of the rocker. Only peel half off.

Take rocker off

If you have a pair of decent cir clip pliers that have the knurl on the out side push that in and "carefully" pull the tube out through the head. If you dont have the plier things a pair of long nose pliers and feed it through. ..... guess you dont need to be too careful - its already a stuffed tube.

There are O rings top and bottom. I would replace those

reverse and do tappets if not hydro
