We just bought an engine from local euro dismantlers, and the guy there presumed that it was a 1700 motor. (We knew only of 1600, 1800 and 2000 so
thatt really stumped us, we were told later from someone that it was out of an old porsche.) But now that he has taken it out of the kombi that it was
in, he says it is actually an 1800.
The details on our docket say:
VW Kombi 72-73 VW0046
1302 Engine
Engine No.: AD008161
We googled the engine code no. and found that the code AD was a Type 1 / Type 2 1.6L. It definitely doesn't look like our old 1.6L and it's
twin carb.
Can anyone shed some light on whether this motor is a 1600/1700 or 1800!!!!

Hi
As you have discovered AD is the engine number for 1585 cc (called 1600). What size it is can easliy be found if you pop a head off and measure the
bore & stroke.
1302Steve
I'm sorry I'm a total halfwit when it comes to VW's. Are you saying that this engine is a 1.6?
What I think might of happened is we exchanged our 1600 + cash for this other motor so the docket might actually be reading the 1600 stats. We dropped
it off at our mechanic's this afternoon and he was surprised as to how much bigger then the old motor it is. It also has an alternator not a
generator, as well as the twin carbs. which I believe the 1.6 has neither.
Will just have to wait and see what the mechanic has to say about it, i was just really curious and wanted to know.
I think you will find it is a "type 4" motor, which can be 1700 1800 or 2 litres, the 1700 is very rare these days, it is COMPLETELY
different from the 1200 1300 1500 & 1600 it would be best for your mechanic to check things out before removing the motor in yours, you may need
your money back , go through the technical posts for piccies & info on engine numbers etc
sorry half asleep, just realised you dont have the old engine any more . you will need the receipt with the correct engine number on it or you wont be able to have a legally registered vehicle 1800 motors generally start with AP I think, does your kombi have an access panel to the engine above it,, inside the tailgate as well as the rear access lid?
1800 type 4 start with ap
AD numbers as i recall were a replacement only case for a 1600 type 1 beetle, your euro parts guy wouldnt know jack about aircooled im thinking, find an
aircooled mechanic.
And heres one i prepared earlier, enjoy http://www.type2.com/bartnik/tech.htm :thumb go to miscellaneous then engine codes
No, that info is wrong for Australia,
AD is a 1600 twin port engine fitted to Beetles from '71 to around '74 ish, then they go to the AS 1600 twin port with thin 8mm head studs.
according to my information, the AD is actually an aftermarket replacement crank-case for a 1600, so not an original 1600 engine as came in a beetle or kombi.
If that is the case, all the 1600 beetles in Australia must have had a new case fitted!!!:o
I don't think so.
the AD was the factory fitted box not an aftermarket replacement .. here is a full listing of engine codes and the years they came out and were

and there you have it.................
steff..
I'm afraid Dave and DubCrazy are right (thanks Crazy,) the AD was, from memory, the original superbug case - hence the 1302 reference, in
Australia. The confusion comes from the americans, who got the 1600 engine earlier than us, in a 1500 crankcase, then leapt to the
"official" engine.
Oops - forgot to mention:
The AD is definitely a Type 1 1600 case.
Confused? Volkswagen already had a thriving business with local production in Australia (I know there was a factory in Clayton, Victoria [which laterbecame a Datsun factory,] but I'm not sure if the SA plant existed) by this time, but for some reason the 'mericans were still importing
them...
So there you have it,back
to the drawing board !!!!!
OK, sorry if i was wrong. i was just reading out of an old guide. it lists: B6, AE, AH, and AJ as original t1 1600 codes, B5 and AE as original t2 1600 codes, and then goes on to state that 'replacement crankcases' were available as factory new sets for repair after engine blowing up etc, the codes for the 1600 replacement cases are F1, F2, AB, AD, AK and AS, although it mentions that the AS was listed as a super beetle from '73 on. i was simply quoting from a book in my above post and have no idea of ts accuracy.
Crisis over - took it up with the euro parts dude and he said it was a typo and it is infact a 1800, and therefore AP! :thumb (We got lucky, he
originally thought that it was a 1700 and only realised that it was an 1800 after he got it out and we had already paid for the 1700!
)
Anyway , thanks for the help, it probably would have been tricky trying to register it with QT without the correct Engine No.
