well I've just changed the oil in my bug and as I was tipping it down the storm water drain(jus kiddin') I found this in the old oil,it a steel washer not the copper ones under the acorn nuts.this is bloody typical with the "dubs by the pub"run next weekend.
can somebody tell me what it is please?

I'm realy at a loss,I was changing the oil and while it was draining I replaced my pulley chrome back cover and the brest plate.I suppose I may have droped it in the oil pan but...I'm sure I didn't.I'll go out and check my work as I did have a big night:puke

ok its not an engine tin ware washer as the type of metal is harder than them,also the out circumference is smaller than tin-ware washers though the inner is the same.

i have seen some of the oil change kits now with steel washers and not copper ones so it may b one of them.

The last time I changed the strainer I used the copper ones though I can't remember the ones that were replaced,I'm hopping it was one just stuck in the oil pan from last time.

I had half of that come out of my bug the other day when i was changing the oil, i freaked aswell not sure what it was from. The original brass washer was still there so it had me dumbfounded.:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce

I've never had a motor apart, is there any thing that small in a 1600tp.I havn't taken the tappet covers off as I havn't got any spare gasketts.I will take it up to GCVWR if I get a chance today and see if they got time to look at it.I was thinking that somebody on here could put me out of my missery.

Yes ive seen oil filter kits with steel washers in them as well so its about the same size as a copper washer.

It could also be off the oil suction tube as they are attached to one of the cover studs on the inside of the engine, usually they have a nylon lock nut on them.

Next time you dump the oil see if the suction tube is held in position with a nut.

Unfortunatly i think you have to strip the engine to re fit the nut unless you have tiny fingers

ok if its part of the suction tube can I get away with it at the moment(dubs x pub)??
my oil light is on when I turn the key on and when the motor starts/runs the oil light goes out,is this ok.shouldn't the strainer hold the tube in place for the time being?as it always seems to be a tight fit when I put a new strainer in.

The strainer tube should ( famous last words ) stay in place with the aid of the strainer mesh, fingers crossed and its and old oil cover washer instead.

Thats what your oil warning systems is susposed to do. It sounds OK to me

so close to dubz that I think I'll tell myself anything to make sure I go in the bug

Get your self a CLEAN container and dump the oil into that so you can re use it,, or dump it altogether

if you have any doubt then you can undo the sump plate and check it for sure. it will wriggle around and i think you can see if the holding nut has disappeared.

Have had this problem in the past myself and i would personly pull the sump plate off and check, because remember there is mabey a nut floating around in there too!!!.You can fit a new washer and nut with the motor in situ ,for memory you will have to modify a 10mm spanner with a grinder,hope this helps ANDREW
