what might my potential problem be if my steering in my 75 kombi starts to make a slight creaking sound.

Based on my very limited experience check the rubber disk on the bottom of the steering column. It perishes and cracks over time - bad karma if it breaks but that seems to be rare. Also check that you've still got some oil in the steering box. The seal perishes and the oil leaks out. If you're slack like me you can just top it up every so often.
