Speedo cable repacement in a bay kombi

I have just removed the inner cable (in 2 pieces). It looks like I won't be able to slide a repacement int the existing outer cover.
Is that the go?
If not what do I do to fix the situation? Does anyone have a kombi they are wrecking with a functioning speedo cable, if so how much are you asking for it?
