Flat 4 Steering Wheel
blup58 - February 9th, 2004 at 02:39 PM

G'day All

I need advice on fitting this wheel.

I have exchanged the stock steering column in my 57 to a later model collapsible column (for safety reasons).
The Flat 4 steering wheel I purchased (refer attached image) came with the boss kit to fit the splines of the later model steering column. Therefore the wheel fits on the splines etc perfectly.

However I then tried to bolt the boss kit to the steering column but the only nut I had was the one attaching the oval steering wheel to the original column. This nut was to big in outside diameter to fit inside the boss kit (where the nut holds the boss kit to the column)

I think the nut has the right thread for the steering column but its to big to fit inside the boss kit.

Has anyone else had this problem??

Should I have recieved a special nut with the wheel or is an early beetle steering coumn nut different to late models with respect to outside diameter.

Aaaaagghhhhhh.....how and what am I meant to use to fit this wheel.

Cheers

Brad

Take it to a bolt shop.
You will be able to get a smaller nut but with the same thread.
Cheap as chips!

or you can go to your friendly local vw parts supplier or wrecker, and get one off a curvy windscreen beetle, or a post '75 kombi.
I had the same dilemma a couple of weeks ago when I put the deluxe padded steering wheel in the Kombi. I had to change steering columns.
