type iv oil cooler

looking at fitting an external oil cooler cooler to my 1800 kombi. any advice, experiences?

Mate,
Have a look at the photo's of my bus; midway under the body i have fitted 2 Oil coolers....they r from a "cooper" mini.

Great for ground clearance, good construction and all alloy.....

Any problems, drop me aline.

looks very neat. where did you plumb it from on the engine and did you keep the stock cooler.

First of all, the guy before me did most of the work u see...(Thanks Steve). What i can tell u is that there is a Suburu WRX type of oil cooler adapter sandwhich plate that mounts between the engine block and the oil filter, it acts as a thermostat, and routes hot oil to the coolers.....the hotter the oil, the more oil they get.
As for a standard cooler, yep have retained it.

what I would like to know is, I have a PermaCool Remote Oil Filter set up, the remote golf filter sitting in the area behind the rear Wheel arch below the battery , it runs on 1/2" inch ID hoses, but I still need to run a cooler, I have one handy with 1cm tubes & just wonder if this smaller ID would still be OK

sorry Peter 1cm inlet & outlet only , similar construction to original cooler 5 row 10" x 3.5" x 2"

As the max. flow rate is proportional to the area of the tube, the mx. flow rate of the cooler 10 mm tubes compared with the filter 12.5 mm tubes is approx.:
(10 X 10) / (12.5 X 12.5),
or 2/3rds roughly.

With kombiluva's setup, the coolers are *in parallel* with the normal oil flow, so it doesn't matter how restrictive they are; any flow through the coolers reduces the backpressure of the total oil system (minus a bit of loss in the thermostat).

It sounds like you're contemplating putting the filter *in series* with the normal flow, so any losses through the cooler would be additive to toal losses, in which case the somewhat restrictive pipe bore might be an issue. I know this is not very clear, I'll try to make a sketch this evening.

no, dont worry about sketch, I understand, this would be inline so would be essentially full flow thats why I thought I should ask as to whether the flow would be too restrictive, considering that the inner diameter of the brass adapers supplied with the remote filter kit to fit the 1/2" ID rubber hose also supplied are about 1 cm or even slightly less

tell me more about this Subaru-style adaptor plate ???

Is it actually a Subaru part ?
Does it bolt straight on ?

Well what can I say...Is it a subi adaptor plate...yes it is ....so I have been told.

The best person to speak to is "Shimo" down at Dunham Automotive near woollongong. He was fitting these to buses when he was at HELLBUG, and I believe he and Jeff Unwin came up with the idea..(I may be wrong).

I will crawl under my bus on the weekend and see if I can get a photo or two and confirm the above.
