fuel system clean out
blutopless2 - February 28th, 2004 at 01:04 PM

has anyone cleaned out a fuel tank before?? i want to clean the old fuel out of the system before starting up the bug and was wondering if anyone can suggest the best method and things to do it with?? is it better to remove the tank or just clean in situ and flush the lines to the pump??

Hey dude,i look at it like spring cleaning each year i pull the tank and flush out the crud from the year before.Dunno what you have ile guess its a blue superbug convertible,on my 67 std theres like 4 bolts and a wire to the gauge and lift it up a bit and disconnect fuel line, assuming very little petrol in tank (heavy).Disconnect fuel line at pump and get somethin to add air pressure to the fuel line to blow it out, have a glass jar taped to one end and see what crap if any comes out ,good luck dude.;)

Most radiator places will steam clean a fuel tank. If possible get them to coat the inside with sealer then you won't have to bother taking it out for several more years.....

I recently patched up my fuel tank. Its a lot easier to get at when its pulled out, its only held on by 4 bolts in a beetle and its a cinch to pull out. Get a fuel tank repair kit from the POR-15 guys. I cleaned it out, prepped the rust, and coated it with special fuel tank sealant

Its kind of hard to check the internal fuel line cos its so hard to get at. U can blow it to see if there are any leaks but its difficult to replace.

thanks all for the info.... think i will remove and clean the whole system... sealing sounds like a good idea too.
