I have a starter that came with a box of crap with my '68 baja.
I dont know what year it's from, but it looks ancient. its huge, and has screw on plates on the solenoid.
Someone wanted a 6V starter and I don't want to get his hopes up because I have NFI what this one is...
how do you tell without fitting it up and trying it?
Hi
The voltage is written on them and the 6 volters have a larger spigot bearing size.

The 6 volt starter has a different number of teeth to mesh with the 6 volt ring gear. 6v & 12v have different number of teeth on the ring
gear. I can count the teeth on a 12 volt starter motor tomorrow, but they normally have the voltage stamped on them... The mounting holes for 6v &
12v are the same , as far as I know, back to around 1961... not sure on ovals etc...

thanks guys. if you could count the teeth thatd be great. there is no Voltage numbering anywhere on it.
well I took some pics of it, can anyone confirm what it is?
That looks a hella lot like my 6v starter but im usually wrong so that would make it a 12v
Well, it IS definately, dirty & crappy looking... and OLD looking..
A 12 volt starter motor has 9 TEETH on the pinion....
I just counted them... not sure about a 6v
should be more or less - not the same though...

and it doesn't say whether its 6v or 12 volt on the strater motor...
It wouldn't have taken much to stamp a couple of extra numbers....

36HP starter : Bosch EED 0.4/6L/4
40 HP starter : Bosch EEF 0.5/6L/1
40 HP type 2 : VW 113 911 021 B
these are 6 volt starter numbers.
this may be of some help..

what was the first year the 12 volt came out?
thanks lee. my one there has 9 teeth so i guess that makes it a 12V.
anyone want it? otherwise the OTTO is gonna eat it.
The first 12 Volt Beetles sold in Australia were the New Updated 1968 Model.... In the UK, they were still selling 6v 1200cc beetles in
1968...
Most 6 volt starter motors would have been thrown away many years ago...

6v starters have the solenoid terminal posts at 45 deg angles. the 12v ones go straight up
secoh. that looks like a 6v starter to me. i was told you could tell the difference, as a 6v has taht plate on the terminal side. and 12v dont. here
is a pic of two 6v. the top one is from pre 66.
then a 12v at the bottom.
and i think a shaft on the 12v is thinner.
