I'm probably going over old ground here, but couldn't find a thread on this with a quick glance through tech talk.
Question 1.
I've got an old twin barrel Holley kicking around in the shed, got the auto choke and all, I think they were referred to as "Bugspray"
carbies in the good old days. Someone told me years ago they were crap and I don't see them around often. Are they any good or will I use it to
keep my shed door open?
Question 2.
Is the only thing stopping me using T3 twin carbies on an upright engine the manifolds and linkages? If so, why isn't this a more common carby
set up for T1's when with the relatively high price of Webers, Dells and Kadrons?
Holley bugsprays were OK on veedubs, back in their day. But times have moved on and there are better options out there nowdays. Get someone to set one
up correctly and it'll go alright.
"Kadron" and Solex are one and the same from what I can gather. My Kads are twin Solex carbies. T3 twin carbies are probably the same as
mine (and many others) just with different manifolds and linkage. Word on the street is that Webbers and Dells are better than Kads for performance
out of the box. But all depends on the "package".
Kadrons are completely different to T3 carbies.
I've used the Type 3 carbies on an 1835cc motor with a mild cam and they worked well. But the Kadrons would have been better. I guess second hand
carbie prices make it cheaper to purchase Kadrons,Webbers etc than trying to modify linkages etc on the T3 carbies.
The bugspray's are dinosaurs, but I've also used one on a 1640cc in my Baja for about 4 years and had no problems. :thumb
Hmmm... maybe I'll replace the Kadrons on the Splitty with the Bugspray, and put the Kads on the Ghia. (if you can all follow that) Got nothing
to lose at this point.
For the purpose of the exercise, however, I was enjoying trying to figure out how to modify the T3's. Did you use them on an upright, and did you
modify the T3 manifolds or make new ones?
Used them on an upright. I used the T3 manifolds that have the balance tube outlet on the side of the manifold, the usual position is two outlets on the back. I'm not too sure which model they came off. For the lingages I modified the centre piece from the T3 and modified the linkages to suit. Air filters were Unifilter socks.
Actually, the name Kadron comes from a kit using, if memory serves, early Brazilian Solexes - but in 36 & 40 mm, sizes that weren't stock on
the VW. If you find an original set you will probably find striking similarities between their linkage and what you came up with, craig - though
yours is probably better!
As for the "Bugspray," I'd be very interested to see how one went on a stroker, as their bottom end response was always a bit poor.
But again they offered a nice boost in power for a little money!
