Belt drives
Buger Gary - March 10th, 2004 at 10:00 PM

A freind of mine asked me to ask about a drive belt kit to fit a glimmer type of belt to his type 1 motor. He is after a whining type of noise when it's running(stuffed if I know why!) Does anyone know where he could get one of these kits?

Straight cutcam gears will give the sound he wants along with strength and probably an adjustable cam too!

I have already told him that but he doesn't want to dismantal his motor.

I've seen a gilmer belt drive on a beetle before - it was a show car from the early 90's (W.A), red / orange / yellow baja - engine sounded wicked, but was worked with dellorto's also.

I would suggest he find a contact for Gilmer themselves and ask them. It didnt look like a custom made kit, so maybe they are off the shelf ?

Hi

I used a tensioning pulley on my motor from an air conditioning setup, bought it from Bearing Services, it does give a bit of wine, maybe not as loud as a Gilmer drive.

a gilmer drive by itself whines a little, but not that much. Normal timing belts are gilmer style drives and they don't whine.

Most of the cars with gilmer drives have straight cut cam gears, so whine

and the gears in the supercharger itself also whine, the higher the boost the harder the supercharger internal gears work, the louder the whine.
