When I turn the key the starter turns over ok & lights work but the engine does not fire? Any suggestions as to the problem? She has been running a little rough & not sounding her usual self

Well it could be one of 2 things

Fuel or spark Check the easiest one first which is fuel pump the accelarator and look down the carby is there fuel pumping down the throat ???

Hey Beetle bailey, do you know if the Bros MC still has a clubhouse in Yarraville? My ex-boss was the club secretary going back about 15 years. :)

Check the fuel as Dave suggested, then check that you have spark at the points. If you have, try checking the timing next. :thumb

Check Your Rotor Button inside the distributor. VW rotors have a resistor imbedded in them between the inner & outer contacts.... if there is a burn mark there, the resistor has burnt out....
A burnt out Condensor will also stop an engine. Make sure the points are opening. If the condensor is crook, Your points will be pitted or burnt, a points file will help here, for a tempory fix until new points & condensor are installed. A Points file is a Great tool.. I wouldn't be without one... They can start many a stopped engine & keep it running...

If you don't have a "points file" you can use a finger nail file. The diamond coated ones work best. Just make sure you clean it before you give it back! :)

points files are kinda like stuffing boxes instead of tap washers. with the contacts on points these days, just get a new set. seriously. criminy. I mean really. what's the world coming to. :D
