Help with drums

Driving my 67 to Cen Park today and my brakes are being weird. I put my foot on the pedal and as i apply pressure the pedal starts to pump up and down and it feels like i'm driving over logs! Told it may be the master cylinder. Ideas please.

how many times have they been machined? could be out of round, but beware the final skim, it can make them warp easier the thinner they get. while you're there, change to disks :D

I would check the tightness of your wheel nuts. Have you change tyres lately have you been to a wheel place.

THEY HAVE BEEN OVERTIGHTENED

The early brake drums will distort if the wheel nuts are overtightened. You need to do this quick other wise the drums will be buggared

Remove the hubcaps and undo all the wheels nuts on each wheel and retighten carfully, you might be able to say it.

Also when you tighten your wheels try tighteneing every 2nd bolt until all are tight. If you have had 1 wheel off latley try moving the wheel around 1 position at a time or get someone to put their foot on brake with the car jacked up and try to find which wheel has the problem, then swap position like I said.

I have changed wheels recently for painting etc but refiited them myself by hand , using the standard tools. I will check that firstly. Having said that the pedal started playing up after a rather scary dcent on Bulli Pass , got worse since and been told that some of the drums may be fooked! I have all the history on the car and apart from drums(machined aleady) and Master Cylinder evrything else has been replaced.

The brakes were fine up until Bulli so it's time to get some help and look at the wheels and drums i think. GREAT!!!

look in to getting the drums machined or replaced but I don't think the master cylinder is the problem

If you had thenm too tight and went down Bulli using heaps of brakes then they have heated and distorted under load.

You may not be able to fix and maching wont do anything.

Undo the whel nuts and torque to 22 Ft Lbs as per the book.

Adjust the brake shoes up and see what happens then. It will be in the front drums

So check the wheels are torqued correctly , then have a look at the FRONT drums first , right?. If they've been machined already i think i'll be replacing them. I'll see if i can borrow a torque wrench from someone local.

Thanks for the help , i'm broke and don't want to waste money replacing stuff that i don't have to!
