The crash of 04 took my thread of seeking assistance re 1776 motor.
I want to build a 1776 motor for my splitty and want to know what I need to buy and machine for the job. I have only rebuilt one other 1200 motor and
this will be a real challenge but one I am looking fwd to. I hope to use a single weber ex 2 litre cortina/escort as I was told this would be a good
choice for a motor that does not have to cause tyre shred each time I take off.
I want reliability and more power with good reliability as I hope to do a little touring.

Go and have a look here for a cuppla weeks or months if you like to research properly http://shoptalkforums.com/ go to there engine build forum and use the search function as far as prices just ring up our
sponsers,as far as carbs go you can put on whatever you can find a manifold and linkage(s) for,im not keen on single carbs ive got carb icing from
hell syndrome.

Just keep it simple. The 1200 you built is no different to build than a 1776. The std stroke means there is no clearancing involved, its getting the
combo (cam, heads, compression, deck height, carbs, exhaust) right thats the trick.
Read lots, how to hot rod your vw (?) is a really good book to start with, as lugnuts said there is a wealth of knowledge on the STF and cal-look.com
. Also get a good manual with all the engine clearances and tolerances listed, and a few measuring tools...
Heres my pick,
Stick with stock valved DP heads if you want to run heater boxes, change to a decent set of single springs, engle 100 cam, stock rockers, around 8.0:1
compression, either a progressive or dual single barrel carbs, 1 3/8" exhaust, stock weight flywheel, std clutch and disc. You wont need a c/w crank,
just get the bottom end balanced, I would get the crank and flywheel 8 dowelled.

HD Clutch $400
AP2 cam $140
bearings $100
rings $100 and again and again = $300
Machining
at least $500 for 3 angle, fly cut, case etc
There is at least $3000 - and all of dubious quality :jesus

rebuilt rockers with no wire clips

bug pack exhaust (new)
second hand 40mm dells with linkages, airleaners and manifolds ($750 !!!!)
lightened flywheel
8 doweld flywheel
new clutch
new 009 dizzy
its a really good street motor for a bug, nice torque but gets up and goes when needed
