lowering 76 bay
xhippy - March 24th, 2004 at 07:07 PM

Hey gang,
I've hit a bit of a stumbling block with my ideas on lowering the bus. Been told the indian setup is not RTA approved in Vic.? Sent an email to them awhile ago but no reply. ( I know people get busy, no drama)
Does anyone have thoughts?
Thanks

Oopps, forgot to mention cbb as well. no reply Must be some big difference with the states rules & regs.

Get ya bus registered first. then...... dump it to the weeds...It worked for me...And being beautiful Victoria I don't have to get a Roadworthy again until I sell it....Good system eh? And this is the home of the AFL and Fosters...:beer:beer:beer

100% Indian Auto..front and rear
Cost me heaps for the stickers, but they slammed me bus for free...It is adjustable, I can raise it up to almost standard in about 1hour. Not that I would want to do anything that dangerous...the air is a bit thin up there.... and I wouldn't wanna lose conciousness driving along...

That looks sweet Dubnut, how do you like the ride quality?
I'm doing the same thing at the moment, so I guess I'll find out for myself soon! I'm also using all Indian stuff, he was real helpful whenever I was asking anything, no matter how stupid.

xhippy - Chief told me last time I talked to him that he is a man down at the moment so is busy and doesn't get to the emails as often.

lobus - March 26th, 2004 at 12:20 PM

Well the ride is a little less smoother than stock...but think of all the extra oxygen you get down here!
And the only stupid question is the one that goes unasked.
The chief is a real find I reckon, he doesn't just do the work with the busses but he doesn't seem to mind talkin about em and sharing the feeling. Other mechanics I have dealt with were good with the work but not on the same mental level as far as living in the lo lane...
I am just a little shitty that his workshop is 800km from my place..It's a bit hard to do the pop in...

Does it affect your insurance in a crash if you modify after rego?

Daniel - March 26th, 2004 at 02:08 PM

800kms... you're lucky, I've got a whole heap of water to get over!!!
I have a cut 'n turned beam at the moment so I think anything will be an improvement, especially on these rough roads over here.
Most people over here look at me strange when I say I'm lowering my van, I've only found one shop over here who would consider it!

Rustycamper - It is always a good idea to get your mods certified, as long as you use quality stuff and have good workmanship there shouldn't be a problem. Then your insurance will also be sweet.

kombi_kid - March 26th, 2004 at 06:25 PM

Came a cross a VW shop near Cambridge (North Is) that was importing &fitting Indian adjusters

xhippy - March 26th, 2004 at 06:49 PM

Looks like i'm heading to sydney! Gotta wait till the piggy bank fills up again though. (Darn HSV engine rebuilds!) Still wondering about Victorian regs just for interest sakes.

kombi_kid - March 26th, 2004 at 08:42 PM

he states in the instructions to get it passed by a engineer for rego otherwise its like fitting anything that isnt meant to be there (or factory) so same applies when u have an accident!
cheers

Kimm sells the parts and ships them if you want, I bought the front beam at the nationals and had it fitted by a mechanic here. I got him to do the arse end on the way to Valla last year. So there is no need to go all the way up to Sindney to get the thing done. Although meetin Kimm and talking kombis for hours sure is worth the effort..

When did you go there? That's my local vw mechanic. He's just finishing off the install of my Indian IRS. Did you have a look around his paddock? You should have asked to have a look in some of his sheds......heaps of cool stuff hiding away.

Great to see a good post on lowering a bay !!!!

What about cost ???? Any idea on the complete job for front and rear ??? I was thinking about getting the kit shipped it from indian and buying a front beam getting it done and then fitting it. Pity I just did my balljoints would have been good timing !!!!

Any rough cost idea much appreciated. Oh the Ute would look so good slammed on its arse :)

Cheers

wacked1 - March 30th, 2004 at 08:16 PM

I spoke to a guy form The Kombi Zoo in Katoomba NSW and he said they can do it for about $400 for the front and $200 for the rear.
Cheers

The beam adjusters from Indian are around $200 I think (don't know exactly) and that's with his adjustable bumpstops as well. If you are interested just give them a call.

Scooter - If your ute has IRS you will be able to drop the rear by turning the springplates. The beam would have to be dropped out for the adjusters to be welded in.
And I agree, a slammed ute would look cool, add some whitewalls and a couple of old school bikes on the back and cruise.

He will probably have his gear on sale at the Nationals..I will post the latest prices after Easter...If I remember

There is a couple of 19mm nuts in the centre of your tosion bars. Hoist the car up and undo them. There is an adjustable slide thingo that will come undone as well. Mine was locked in place and needed a judicious whack with a hammer and chisel (thanks bugboy). then you lower the car down while holding the wheels up and see how you go. The bumpstops are removable (with an allen key) and you put them into the second position. If you have some one with a bit of mechanical nouse you can work it out. You can always ring Kimm at Indian in Sydney on a Sat morning and he will explain it in more detail.
Make sure you have the car so it won't fall down on you. There is not much room under there once you come down to the weeds with me!

xhippy - April 1st, 2004 at 09:08 PM

OK, now i've got this lowering bit sorted out. (my holdens aren't this much fun!) Next step is the 17x8's i'm determined to get underneath the thing. From what i've been reading a fair bit of work is required I believe. Not a problem, some of my cars I used to have "couldn't (shouldn't?) be done" .
Once I get things under way I'll get a digital camera & keep things up to date on the site. Gonna be a little while yet though. This has got to be good it's a promo vehicle for my Business!
Cheers

Hehe Dubnut it looks like you'd be hard up to fit that beer bottle under the front bumper!! Nice photo :)

lobus - April 1st, 2004 at 11:36 PM

Why would I want to put it under the bumper?
I was only interested in puttin it in me mouth...........
P.S> Here is a nice wasser kuhler with a kuhl rego

xhippy - April 2nd, 2004 at 07:59 PM

Great pic of yer bay, unless you're seven foot tall it really shows how much it's lowered! My sentiments exactly on the beer vs bumper. Also good to see a pic of someone who is, shall we say, in the same "mature" age group as myself with an interest in customizing vehicles!
Cheers & Beers

Thanks for all the usefull info Gents (Ladies ?)

Im guessing I have IRS on the rear ??? Its a 74....

Was also wondering whats the biggest wheels to go undera stock bus ??? 16's Was thinking about some Falcon 16's as they sound easy to fit. Wouldnt go Big tyres get some low profile jobs.... Nice.....

Although I would really love a set of Porsche cups but now Im dreaming :)

xhippy - May 14th, 2004 at 06:41 PM

Hey, if anyones still reading this, i've finally found someone in melbourne that's willing to do the lowering job with the indian kit! Around $1000 all up. Will give there details when i've had a good chat to them regards engineering certs, rwc etc. Don't wanna give too much away yet incase they don't approve of me doing so! Will keep any intersted parties informed:) Cheers, Steve.
