tech q for the mechanically minded

Tech Q for those more mechanically knowledgeable than I (probably 99%+), I don't know if the EXTREMELY LOUD grating/grumbling (virtually unbearable) noise coming from the rear end of my split bus is the gearbox or the reduction hubs...

Details which I hope will help: the grumbling only occurs when I accelerate. If I'm rolling with out the clutch engaged it's very quiet. If I'm rolling with the clutch engaged but not accelerating at all there is a quiet whirring noise as would be expected. But as soon as you even slightly touch the accelerator the grumbling starts...

Also, when I start rolling very slowly from a standing start in first there is a clicking/clunking sound which increases in frequency as I increase speed. It is this noise which when going faster causes the unbearably loud noise.

I'm hoping someone might be able to hazard a guess as to what it might be from that description so I can decide how to go about fixing the problem??? Anyone??? Cheers!!

my splity used to make a dunk dunk noise when i pushed it, it also made it hard to push...it was the reductions...that was a wild stab

Well, if there's no noise without the clutch engaged then this suggests to me that it's not something downstream of the gearbox. I am not speaking from experience here though, so take that as a guess.

Doesn't sound like much fun in any case.
