loose head nuts or a pulled head stud.

Check the torque of your head nuts.

if it is a pulled head stud then you should get a clackety clackety noise when you drive (it is an exhaust leak). Also the engine will pop and crack randomnly and run pretty unevenly and weak. It's hard to gauge this if the car has always been like this.

When the oil cooler leaks it tends to run down the side of the case - i doubt it is a oil cooler leak

Going to a 1600 isnt a bad idea. remember 1200 parts are hard to get hold of, and if the case is shagged then you dont really have any other options.

ì will investigate further over the easter break ,apart from going to nats on sunday. it did have exhaust leak in the j pipe that side but havent put new pipes on and had it started as pulled motor to do a little rust repair .
thanks paul

Oil from the oil cooler can be blown anywhere...
but it does look like the oil has been blown out of the cylinder
I would also go for the 1600 engine....
with the doghouse oil cooler wider cooling fan etc...
Best of luck..

Or You could add case savers to the 1200 engine....

looks fine to me...:alien how old is it?
crikeys! is it doing anything wrong besides looking a wee bit oily? unless it's fully pouring out, just keep puttin around i say. in my unexpert opinion... you find that you have 'semi-floating barrels'. no biggy. not blowing heaps of smoke is it?
