Trafficator Advice
phantom - April 5th, 2004 at 02:21 PM

After some good advice from the forum concerning my '60 Bug and the leftover indicators fitted to my B pillars, I did some investigating and found that I have 2 nice holes behind where trafficators would have once been.

My VW manual says basically nothing about them and doesn't even have a picture. I have 2 wires on each side and nothing else. Can anyone help me with information on them, like:

- how do they work, off the normal turn lever? If I have normal indicators added to the car, will I need a seperate switch for these trafficators?
- What am I missing in the guts of the pillar? I am going to assume some type of motor and the physical arm assembly, anything else?
- I imagine these things will be next to impossible to come by, any advice on where to start looking for a set? Are all years the same or do I need to specify a year when looking?

Any other details on these things would be appreciated, I really am interested in trying to get these functional (long term, car is a project) and would appreciate any help. If these are not available anywhere then I will look at the next option - restoring the current pillar lights.

Thanks.

They work off the normal turn lever, they are 6V so if you have converted the car to 12v you need to use a voltage drop device.

The trafficators are a one piece kit, they have a solenoid and the arm all mounted in one piece.

Difficult to find in servicable order and at a reasonable price but it kinda depends on who you know. I think there are different lens types depending on the year but that is about the only difference.

just out of curiosity, how much would a half serviceable set sell for approximately?

Check out ebay and http://www.thesamba.com

Just type in semaphore and you will see how much they sell for.

I had a set for sale a while back for $150 but the buyer pulled out and I decided to keep em.
