Are split bus and early beetle (59) headlights interchangeable? I know the focus would be different, but are they the same size? I've got some US,
clear lense split bus headlights and am thinking of putting them on the beetle. Do they just go straight in?
Thanks.
Straight in.
Also use the side light as an indicator.
Cheers
Dave
Great. Thanks Dave. Yeah that was part of the plan.
not sure which is which
The Kombi may have the hole to let water out of the chrome rim.. I have seen plenty of split kombis with Beetle headlight lenses ....
the front bulb used for a Blinker should be illegal as it cannot be seen with the headlamps on.. whether its clear or amber..
Safer to have a seperate blinker lamp on the vehicle...
it must be able to be seen from the side of the vehicle....
this is why modern cars have the small blinker on the side..
or in the door mirrors...

my 63 bug has the blinker in the headlamp, no probs there... "should" or "should not" ... but it is
Spoke to a traffic cop over here in Adelaide, he said that as my 57 kombi didnt come with indicators, I didnt need to fit them. if I fitted them in
the headlights they would be better than none. As who would look for the semaphores on a large kombi.
Cheers
Dave
Trafficators are illegal... same as putting Your arm out the window... If You keep your Kombi registered all the time, You don't need blinkers, but
if it runs out You have to update.
Just imagine if the car in front of You never had blinkers...
You would be cursing...
[semaphores were used on boats in the US NEVER on their cars .. they didn't know what to call those arms that stick out in cars in OTHERcountries.... so some naval fellow called them semaphores]
Lee
Semaphores are legal in Victoria. If I can have another "subtle" source of indication that doesn't mean bolting stuff to the guards, sounds
sensible to me & I might be a bit safer on the road.
Hey Lee, why is it the orange globe wouldn't be seen in the lamp with the headlights on. If it was orange and flashing, wouldn't it be visible?
Lee ???
Trafficators are illegal... same as putting Your arm out the window
Where did you see this LAW written....???? which state cause i have a legally registered 56 Beetle using them ??? I think you have been watching
that Traffic light again ion Scone ???
The headlights from a Beetle will fit into a Kombi... except that the Kombi Lens are different as the fluts in the glass run different to a Beetle.
Lee.
Dont know where you got that from, but in Adelaide if it was made that way it can be used,
if it didnt come with seat belts they dont have to be fitted.
Its like, all new cars have to be fitted with a centre brake light, older cars dont have to have them as they didnt have to have them when they were
first rego'ed. If the reg runs out you dont have to make the car fit todays regulations.
American spec lights will be fitted to my bus as it is safer than nothing.
In England we always called them semaphores.
Cheers
Dave
Next question is..... The US lights have a sealed beam unit behind clear glass, whereas the locals have the bulb behind a fluted lense. I'd like to
retain the fluted original glass and I can't imagine the sealed unit is gonna work behind the fluted glass, so.................Do the innards of the
original, fit into the buckets of the US units? Ya with me?
Did you know that in Scone, a law was passed that semaphores were only to be known as trafficators? The rest of the world stayed with semaphores but
didn't tell Scone that they had.
